I am very keen on buying a copy of kuju's rail simulator, and was just wanting to get people who have played it's opinion. Is it an overall good game?

Cheers

In my personal opinion - NO! I got it when it first came out but it was soon clear that in terms of creating layouts etc - it was not for me in the same league as Trainz. I never use it now - pay the postage and you can have mine!!! If I can still find it!

Hello Frown888

Not sure why you have asked twice about this other Sim here in the Auran Trainz Forum. I am sure you can receive good advice about Trainz here, but the other I cannot speak for. Maybe you could try on their Forum if they have one?

Cheers

Usually these threads go in the "Prototype" section...

In answer to the question, well strictly speaking it's no longer Kuju Rail Simulator, a spin off company Rail Simulator.com acquired the rights to the software and re-released it as Railworks. Has its good points and bad points like all the sims, really. From the route builder's POV it's much slower and less intuitive than Surveyor though with the advantage that you can control the radiys of curves and no limits on the angle at which you can lay tunnels. The loft feature for bridges and platforms is also useful.

Where RW falls down is a chronic lack of content. Many people are still sticking with MSTS or Trainz, even model makers haven't bothered converting their items so even simple features such as buildings or clutter is in short supply. The programme has sparked off a "micro-payware" culture where a lot of the stuff we take for granted as freeware in MSTS or TRS, such as scenery items or basic rolling stock - even scenarios - is being charged for. RS.com are using Steam to support and update the sim, unfortunately the last but one update resulted in a bug which nuked WIP routes unless you had a backup. This has reportedly been fixed in the latest update but does not engender a feeling of confidence that it might not happen again sending weeks of work down the drain.

I wouldn't say don't buy RW as it does have some nice features (the appearance of the trees and landscape for one) but it still struggles to establish itself as a reliable train simming platform in the way TRS and MSTS have done.

If you like absolutely drop dead graphics, most definitely.

But in my opinion the rest is even worse than woeful.

I'd suggest it only if you can get it at a steeply discounted price from the remainder bin.

I have Railworks for a week , but i can not say that it is better than TRS.
You get more nice things out of the box ( in TRS you have to make them yourself or the community has to make them ); the sound is better, the physics are better ( but very far from perfect , and sometimes strange behavior ) .
Even if it is version 2 ( with a lot of updates ) it has still a lot of bugs.
The playability of Trainz is much better , esspecial for those that want to play with trains , and not just drive, drive, drive .
The route overview in Trainz is much better ( you can see the whole route and change levers )
In Trainz you can drive at night ; in Railworks also , but you see nothing ( the locs have headlights , but those doesnt emit light ; the environment is dark )
The documentation ( how to build routes , how to make content ) is non existant for some items .
the consequence of this , is that very little content is made by the community ( as far as there is a community )
You can buy some addon packs ( at steep prices ) , but i estimate the available content ( in comparition with trainz ) at 1 to 100 .

It depends if you prefer driving or creating routes. When I,m in the mood to drive I use that and when I,m in the creative mood I use TRS06
