Is it safe yet?

I've been holding off starting a new route for the last few weeks for fear some new change will make half the assets obsolete again or change all the rules again, so my question is: is it safe to attempt to create a new route yet?

As safe as it ever was, which is to say, not really all that safe at all. although if you stay with your current version of the game and it keeps on working for you, then not that much should change other than assets being becoming payware or DLC only . The biggest issue is keeping legacy routes going for newer versions of the game , as the built in base changes and assets that used to be installed become unknowns . I've been working on a route in sp4 2019 for over a year and nothing much has changed for me, ( I never patch upwards ) other than some industries that used to work not functioning as they used to do.

Over half the routes I now use in TS 2022 were started in Trainz version 2004. Over the past 19 years I have updated some of the rolling stock and textures, but everything works better than ever.

When I find something that doesn't work, I simply look for a replacement and move on. In my opinion HD Terrain was a great step forward as was the introduction of PBR textures and TurfFX.

I am enjoying the new release and have been enjoying upgrading my routes again to take advantage of the new capabilities.

Can you post a list of the interactive industries that now work "better" when they ever did ?
I am also presuming that the hundreds of old trees that most older routes use that are now transparent for me dont do the same for you, so can you tell me how you manage that feat ? ;)

My two latest mega-projects, created in TRS2004 and TRS12 respectively, are still working perfectly in the latest Trainz+/TRS22 release. The earlier route has undergone several upgrades in its life to TRS12, T:ANE, TRS19 and now to Trainz+. Each upgrade has seen major changes to the route:-
"Billboard" trees to Speedtrees
Non procedural track to procedural track
Introduction of Effect Layers
Non-PBR ground and track ballast textures to PBR
plus replacing older scenery assets with more recent (and better looking) ones, many using LOD
As dangavel says, you can stay with the older versions of Trainz using their existing routes and assets with few, if any, problems. If your current Trainz version and its installed assets work for you and you are happy to stay with that then you don't have to use the new "technologies" that are available (e.g. Surveyor 2.0, HD Terrain, PBR textures, effect layers, etc) in the latest releases.

Spurred by your encouraging comments, I began a new route yesterday. Problem: my river contained no water. Where was the water effect layer? Fortunately someone on this forum gave me the following instructions:
1 Left click the + symbol next to Effect Layers in the Layer Palette.
2. Give the layer a name - eg Water Test and select water for the drop down Effect Type
3. Enter the colour codes (eg Red = 0.0000, Green = 0.5000, Blue = 0.750.
4. Click the link Apply and then click the Tick

I tried to follow this, but I failed to spot Effect Type and I didn't want a colour, I wanted the reflected sky feature that I thought was default.
Anyway, having done my best, I received the following message:

This effect type is disabled in game settings. You may continue to edit this effect, but the changes willl not be visible in the world.

So, having read you can have multiple water layers, how do I get one?

Go to the tools menu and pick the paint brush tool, then drop down to the bottom of the tools menu and you should see another little yellow paint brush. It will probably say ground height click in the down and up arrows and go to legacy water and pick that. then drop down to the next little yellow brush and it should say height up, click in the up and down arrows and pick what you need from there. If you are working from dem then just check google maps for the height of the water either lake, river or whatever to set your height. then drop down to tool options and add your water height then move over to the water and using your mouse to raise the water to that height. hope this helps.

This is the problem. In the first box, there is only Ground Height, Height Up, Down and Effect Layers. If I pick Effect Layers, I find there is only one, a grass type. I did have a try to add a water effect, but I must have gone about it the wrong way.
