Intermodal Container Assets and Industries

Scottish

There are a lot of assets available for intermodal container handling including rolling stock, cranes, industries etc. Many are available not just on the DLS but also other download sites.

I would like to build a route based around transporting and handling containers and would appreciate advice from those of you who specialise in this type of layout.

Filtering out the good assets from the others is the main problem in getting started. I am particulary interest in good container industry assets which load and unload containers, the best rolling stock which load and unload, any cranes set up as industries and animated ones can also add to the appearance. Seaports and ships which are set up as industries. Road transport as a container industry.

Any suggestions for good assets?

Thanks for bringing the up, i am going to watch this thread with great interest as i want to have some intermodal traffic on a future route of mine.

as for assets, Jointed rail has well cars and containers as freeware in a few different varieties. (TTX, FEC, BNSF), and rrmods.com has national steel car well cars as used by cp, and I think there was one other type of well car avail from them as well.

This brings us to an overdue matter: A container ship.. drivable. It used to be in 04, but due to "improvements" we don't have a ship that can be loaded and driven to another port to load/unload anymore. Or I am missing something??

Transfer Table Ferry

For river crossings there is Vulcan's Transfer Table Ferry Dronning Margrethe II,<kuid2:60238:60033:1>

I've built a container port so here are some suggestions. First, for loading containers, the multiple industry basic works well for containers (or use the multiple industry new if you want) so instead of looking for prebuilt industries that can load/unload containers, just place the multiple industry basic next to various warehouses or factories that you like. That way you can build exactly what you want.

Here are other suggestions:

For container well cars, TTX Econo works for me and is either buit-in or on the DLS.
"Container Crane 1" (or2) are animated overhead container cranes to load and unload ships
"Container Forklift Crane 2" is an animated container forklift to move containers around
I wish there were driveable/loadable container ships - but for just static ones try "Container Ship Global Explorer" and "Container Ship Global Freedom"
For stacks of containers, try "Containers-003", "Containers'005"
For individual tanktainers, just search for "Tanktainers"

What I am looking for on the DLS is a texture that is asphalt with lines so the forklift guys know where to stack them. To see what I mean, in Google Maps Satellite view or Google Earth, look at the container port in Auckland NZ. As a matter of fact, I'm using Auckland for port ideas since it a medium size port serving an isolated country so (as opposed to the megaports in Europe, Asia, etc) there are a lot of different things going on - containers, auto imports, ferry terminal, bulk liquids, fishing charters, etc.
