Information of Session Development

Old Fart
I am returning to the forum after an absence of over a year. One of my principle interests in the game is to be able to develop and publish Sessions for Trainz2010 using existing routes and I have just a couple of questions. Is it necessary to get permission from route developer to publish new sessions for Built-In routes? Secondly, is there any specific forum where there is discussion of Sessions, especially critiques of Sessions. I have been very disappointed in the past (one of the reasons I have not done much with Trainz in about a year) because too often I open a session (even many of the built-in ones in TS2010) and it does not work or instructions are so confusing I can't follow it. Can someone point me to a forum and topics to search where Sessions are discussed and if there is no area such as this, is there any interest in starting one.

Thanks,
BillDinAZ

I have never sought permission to upload sessions, I hope that doesn't make me a renegade. Using built-in and DLS dependencies is the whole point of the DLS I thought.

Of course I would never distribute anyone else's work without permission. And so the sessions I upload only contain the session which merely references DLS and/or built-in content.

The last few of my sessions were announced in the Freeware section of the forum. There was no feedback so I assume either no one has run them or those who have ran them encountered no problems.
Of course I could have now unwittingly opened a floodgate of "your sessions stink", but hey, gotta take the good with the bad.

I agree with William:
I dont see any need to ask permission for creating a session build on a route on the DLS.

Once you have made and tested it, I do suggest you announce it, since it is hard to find sessions by routes already, even harder when not made by the same person. I would advice you to make an important part of the route name part of the session name.

No need to get permission as long as you do not make any changes to the route. I suggested some time back that Auran/N3V create a Session Creation forum catagory, but they said to use the http://forums.auran.com/trainz/forumdisplay.php?5-Surveyors-Operators-amp-Engineers forum.

And I agree about naming sessions. I'm sure there are a lot of great sessions on the DLS, but finding them is a problem. I always try to write a good summary for the description so folks browsing will have some idea what is there.

What type of sessions do you prefer? Passenger? Freight long haul? Switching?

If you want to simulate prototype freight traffic, you might consider using CMTMSystem3. It is a car destination system. Every freight car will have a destination. Load/unload times can be specified. Any trackmark can be an industry. You will have absolute control of the loading of every car that enters the route through a Portal. Allows complicated sessions without complicated directions.

Thanks to everyone who replied. This is very helpful information. As to what types of sessions I prefer. Freight. Mainly short haul that requires navigation through yards. Mostly, I want to develop sessions with a scoring system with in-session triggered messaging. Also, the suggestions for making sure that the name of the session reflect the route name and be announced are excellent ones. I had noticed before when searching for sessions on the DLS that many are out there that provide no clue as to what route they are on. I'm not sure when I will have any ready to publish but I will definitely announce them when I do.

Thanks to all,
Bill

Hello Bill

You decided to make sessions for existing route. For this of course you don't need permission from author, if you don't make changes on the original route in the route layer.. You probably know that you must use only session layer. Good luck, i hope that your session will be out in couple of months.

best regards
