Increasing good weather fog

Sometimes I find there isn’t enough fog to give a nice atmospheric feel to the near view part of a scene.

An extra stop, or two, on the good weather slider to increase it would be great. Maybe one day!

The best (worst visibility) I can get is by maximising both the good and bad weather fog sliders in Surveyor Performance Settings, then adjusting the Surveyor Weather control just one stop anticlockwise from top centre. Any other setting starts rain or snowfall, which I don't always want.

It would be nice to have a train in fog where the front end is visible and the rear carriages are emerging from the mist.

I’ve looked at Trainzoptions and the Technical Manual (v1.03), but can see no obvious edit I can make.

Does anyone have a solution please?

Cheers

I've found there are a few options when trying to do this.

The simplest is to attach a sheet of thin tracing paper to your monitor with sticky tape or blutack. The same effect can also be acheived by giving the screen a very light spray with white aerosol paint, although the effect is unfortunately not quite as easily reversed as the tracing paper option.

If you don't want to mess with the screen, then rubbing your fingers in chilli powder then giving your eyes a good rub also replicates the 'mist' but the major disadvantage is that everything becomes misty, not just the screen, though the effect is temporary (I haven't tried it often enough to say if there are any adverse long-term effects, sorry).

Cheers.

Apologies Casper, I just couldn't help myself.

I think the chilli peppers would replicate looking from behind a waterfall while screaming for help.

Thanks pfx and fran1.

Always plenty of great suggestions and help here.

That’s what I like about this forum!

Tracing paper was not a good look. The paint spraying didn’t work either... neither did the “Undo” command!

On the occasions you have tried it, would you say it is more, or less, painful than the process of correcting assets in TS2010?

I’ve not yet built a waterfall. Hmm. Maybe some of that misty effect in front of a static camera might just work.

All other suggestions (appropriate or otherwise) gratefully received!

"Big Smoke" + <KUID:264402:12160>

for a nice even spread thoughout your route

Yes the special brew is more in my line of thought, however casper you could try a pair of plain glasses and smear gel on them. While your at it a false nose and moustache and a skull cap to complete the look.

@NIARTcar

Nice one!

It’s a non-starter though.

I’ve used big smoke before, but couldn’t find the source block for a week when trying to delete it.

I’m against the use of wind farm generators because of the the potential damage to the wildlife on my route. The (absolutely brilliant) flying geese by whecsailor (kuid:67261:35032), which regularly fly in v-formation over my landscapes, are a protected species (and should also be a protected kuid!)

@robd
Ah yes, the old “Carley Barleys”. That has to be the best suggestion so far!

@ fran1
Your idea is perhaps worth a try ..
..but I’m not too sure about it.

The ultimate extra fog

Cling film over the screen, then up the layers to the required haziness.
Obviously you have to have a fish tank over your head as well, just for effect.

Well, I seem to have stumbled upon a solution on how to increase good weather fog.

I set both Good and Bad Weather Fog to maximum in Performance Settings.

Then I used the trick of using “Drizzle” (1st anti clockwise setting from top dead centre) on the weather control to get the usual murkier effect with no visible rain or snow, using Surie Misty Sky.

However, I've just changed the sky type and find that I can turn the weather control dial fully to the right – and get maximum murk starting much closer than normal ....... with not a single snowflake in sight ... no snow at all! Edit: Not quite right - see next post. :o

Here are a couple of comparative screenshots showing just the effect I was after!

Yippee!

(Now removing false moustache nose and glasses, fishtanks, clingfilm etc)

A slight amendment to the increased fog trick, which I’ve just tried to replicate after reloading the game.

It wasn’t the change in sky that did it. The particle effect must be set to zero (slider to far left). This will disable both snow and rain (just the bits falling from the sky - the murk remains!), but it must be the whole way to the left.

Maxing out rain or snow will increase the murk, with the snow side of the dial giving the whiter effect. The rain side makes it greyer – and you’ll still get lightning bolts and sound.

The down side is that by turning off particle effect you’ll get no smoke, so it ain’t perfect.

The Suggestion Boxcar request for more fog therefore needs to stand.

The effect is still nice though even with the slight drizzle and snow. I would say almost like our usual spring/early summer, and fall weather we have over here. They don't call this New England for nothing!

I can almost feel the chill in the air when looking at your foggy, drizzly picture! Need to get out the sweater and flannel shirt burr!

Hi Joe.

I’ve tried to get something similar to your shot using a few track and hedge splines. I’ve left out the foreground and I’m not much good at snow. However the hedgerow and telegrapgh splines fade out nicely. As do the buildings, signal and isolated trees.

I can’t get it any foggier though. Nothing like the other images in your link!

I’d be interested to hear how you get on.

Cheers

There was an object on the DLS called "Myst" (I think) that used to be used for fog. I never used it myself, so cannot provide any other information.

Thanks for that Euphod.

Maybe someone who has used it will pipe up with their experiences.

I know that some (like Big Smoke) can be very difficult to remove in Surveyor simply due to its large size and almost invisible source block.

Hey casper,

The screenshot looks close enough to the origional, I think we will have to do with what we have for now, hopefully until N3VRF41L figure out how to make it more foggy, I tried increasing the gamma, but nightime shows up like daytime, and at one point, I did not know if it was daytime or nightime...:), so no haunting foggy nights yet.
