All my life i have been a Train nerd and today i finally rode the rails. I took the Amtrak from Bakersfield CA to Sac. About a 5 hour trip. Man it was great. Saw many freight trains passing us on adjoining tracks mostly BNSF but there was some UP and some old BN white faces and even NS and MRL stuff. :) Made it back to the Bar car for a Tangery and tonic. Cant wait to do it again!

Well good for you,I pretty much have been on the train ever since I was born and Im only 16. Im glad you liked it,I do have to say thats its one of the better ways to travel, the best, but also the worst was an amtrak train ride from Newark,NJ to Washington D.C. which took about 4 and a half hours. Hope you go again soon, beware it can get addicting:p . But me and my family travel by train at every chance we can.

Cool,

I too rode a train today, however, It was after a train chase. The crew of a Carolina Southern (My local shortline) was bringing a load of coal to the power plant in Conway. Me and a friend chased the train from Loris. The crew let loose the loaded ones a mile away from the plant so they could collect them emties and switch them to another line (The mainline to Myrtle Beach).

So we rode in the cab (and outside on the platform, my favorite spot) while the crew switched the cars around. I didn't have a camera, as it was an impromptu chase, seeing as we were just driving around. This has been the second time in two weeks that I have rode in the cab of CS train. And these haven't been the first.

The Carolina Southern is very railfan friendly (as some may know) and cabrides are most always given just by asking casually.

All locomotives are first generation (Heck Yes) diesels. The line rosters 4 active GP-18's, an ex CN FP7 unit (the middle locomotive in the lash up today), an SW-7 (Ex B&A, still in the B&A scheme) and ex CN F7B (still in CN colors).

I'm suprised Frank.
I rode my first train back in 1977.....Amtrak from Philadelphia to Chicago for Navy boot camp. I wish I had spent less time in the bar car.

Sorry Titanic,

But I've beat you to the punch when it comes to driving. I drove Carolina Southern GP18 #950 (under close supervision of the engineer) in a 5 engine lash up of 4 GP18's and the FP7 on a 102 car train of emties from Conway to Chabourn.

I drove for 20 miles, operating the throttle like a pro and blew the correct whistle signals for everything, and I had had no previous experince. I have driven about 5 times since then, once on Conways "Around the 4th" festival, with 2 passenger cars in tow (1 engine on each end, since there were no turning or run around facilities).

The most recent was a few months ago. I was on a run to 84 Lumber from Chadbourn to Myrtle Beach, and drove from Conway to just outside Myrtle Beach.

I've gone on more than I can remember, my most memorable one happened a few months ago when I took BR03 001 from Frankfurt Hbf to RAW Meiningen and back. Great trip and I'd do it again any day.

I've had the chance to travel from Belgrave to Lakeside on the Puffing Billy steam railway in the cab of their garratt locomotive, G42. Even had an offer to fire for a short section, but declined as I was enjoying the view and sound (Man that loco sound good!).

Dnutter,

I did not understand a word of that post. Please learn how to type correct sentances. I know your teachers in school taught you better than that.

I understand perfectly, you are not the dumb person, it is the people who cannot make out what you are saying.

Don't let these people be nasty towards you, many will soon realise.

It's common sense people !

Thanks,
Gangsta_Boi

P.S I have only been on the local line by me :(

Congrats Frank

There is nothing like riding a long distance train. I've had the opportunity both out here in Oz and overseas.

I rode Amtrak when I visited your beautiful country back in '93. Went from Oakland CA to Sacramento CA on one of the Coast line commuters, behind what was then a brand new B40-8. After spending a few days in Sacramento, it was then onto the Coast Starlight to Seattle. I had a USA railpass which gave me the ability to travel coach class (sitting). While waiting for the Starlight at the station, I thought I would ask the agent whether they had any sleepers available (the train was due in at midnight and I didn't really want to sit up all the way). Well, luckily for me they did, plus I arranged for sleepers for as many of the trains I was to travel on, and I ended up travelling by sleeper all the way across the rest of the country.

There was nothing in the world better than waking up and looking out my window to see a snow covered Mt Shasta in the background.

There were so many memories from my trip in 93, but seeing Mt Shasta, and riding over Sherman Hill on the now deceased Amtrak train the Pioneer was the closest I'll ever get to heaven!

Cheers
Tony

I got a cab ride on the Zig Zag Railway near Lithgow, in the cab of DD17 no. 1049. Being a railfan, I knew all the controls. I even got to blow her whistle (that was fun.:D)

If u cant understand something , then just take it slowly and read carefully, it might make the sentence clearer,

@dnutter , i know what ur talking about , 1 of my friends is deaf, but she has hearing aids.
