I may be late to the 'party'

Hi to all,

I am a bit late to the trainz community as I only recently purchased TRZ2006 as an introduction to the product.

I am currently working on an article exploring the broad range simulators available on computers and the extent of realism factors.

With regards to TRZ 2006 within the driver section are the default scenarios the only thing available or is there any sort of free play.

Is it possible to experience any form of online simulation?

I would really appreciate any input.

Many thanks

Richard

If your research is to be valid, you should be working on TS2010. TRS2006 is well out of date, is no longer supported, and was never the best of the Trainz versions. You will find that debates on this forum are lively and present differing, sometimes biased, points of view, time spent here will be very useful. In addition, you will probably find all the answers to your questions.

TRS2006 works flawlessly, and it is still used by many, on lower end PC's ... TS09/10 is still in its infancy and several users are having problems with the 10 version not operating on their low end Desktop PC's and almost all mid to low end Laptop PC's, with bugs, glitchs, wierd looking Speed Trees, and SP installation failures. Some of the hundereds of thousands of 06 assets do not work properly in 09/10, and most 09/10 users are running in 06 compatability mode ... Hmmmmm.

Some insist that the 09 version is better than the 10 version ... others profess vice versa. I myself am carefully watching he multitude of problems with the learning curve that 09/10 users are experiencing ... and I myself am looking forward to purchasing the next, bug free, updated version of Trainz in 2011/2012, or whenever that may be.

As Trainz seems to be the easiest RR Simulator to create routes in, at present MSTS, Railworks .... etc ... etc ... don't come up to par with Trainz.

TRS2006 is a good tried and tested program ... if you find that TS09/10 will not run on your low end PC.

Basicly you can not upload any TRS2004/2006 assets or routes to Auran.

But you still can download assets from the DLS.
And you can purchase a FCT that works in TRS2006.
And you can download free version of TRS2004 Paintshed: http://www.gaurc.us/index_files/software.htm (that 04 Paintshed version works in TRS2006 also).
And you can upload your creations to 3rd party sites.
And you can import your 04/06 creations into your 09/10 game and run them.

Feel free to PM me with any questions about TRS2006.

Overall: I would be willing to bet that if I did break down and purchase the 09/10 version, that with much persistance that I could get it operating on my PC and that I would happily switch over to 09/10, (with 06 as a separate secondary program on my PC).

@ cascaderailroad - I think the point here is if griphin is writing an article on current simulations, there isn't much point in doing it on an obsolete piece of software, regardless of how it performs, unless he is going to mention it in retrospect.

I'd take this with a huge pinch of salt if I were you - it's certainly not been my experience.

Welcome aboard. As I see it, there are 4 sims widely available, three of which are payware. Here's the breakdown based on my personal experience or things I've learned here (which may be a bit biased, though I'll try to be fair!:)) FYI, I have not used Railworks, and am only going on what I've read here.

1. Trainz
Advantages
-Easy to create for. In fact, creating assets and routes is more fun than the train-driving experience for many.
-By far the largest content base: selection of routes, assets and objects is enormous. Probably several times all the other rail sims combined.
-Huge potential for advanced capabilities, including non-railroad simulation.
-Best AI.
Disadvantages
-Sound and track realism is somewhat lacking, though the latter can be compensated for by using certain tracks.

2. MSTS
Advantages
-Better lighting than Trainz.
-More realistic in some areas: MSTS supports Doppler effect and more realistic-looking tracks and potentially more realistic signaling. Personally, I find MSTS more fun to drive, though there is a lack of quality routes.
Disadvantages
-Extremely difficult to create routes for MSTS.

3. Railworks
Advantages
-Better lighting and slightly better graphics quality than Trainz (though this has been the subject of debate, especially when in use.)
Disadvantages
-Also extremely difficult to create routes for RW.
-Most (if not nearly all) content is payware.
-Extremely limited content base.

4. OpenBVE
Advantages
-Stunning graphics (from what I've seen.)
Disadvantages
-Extremely difficult to create routes and content for.
-Extremely limited content base.

Likewise. Though TS09 has worked more or less perfectly for me ever since I started using it. Amazing how some people seem to expend so much energy bashing a product they are yet to use.

Of course, that could be classified as a baised opinion...:p There were/are many of us for who TRS06 worked very well. It is one of my favorite versions, although I'm working with TS2010 now...

I would suggest using TRS2009 WBE or TRS2010 EE.

I used TRS2006 up until 4 months ago, and I have found that although TRS2006 is one of the best versions of Trainz, TRS2009/10 have much, much better and detailed content and routes. They are also supported by Auran still, whereas TRS2006 isn't.

Just my opinion.
