I Can't Patch TRS2009???

dej

DL Engineer
I am trying to install service pack 4 for 2009 and ever time i try it freezes half way through the patch. Any Help?

is there anything i can do so i don't have to reinstall all my content? like save a certain set of files to a flash drive or something?

Luckly, the answer to that is yes.

Simply move or copy the local folder from the TS2009 install folder to a safe location before reinstalling, as you will probably have to use a third-party uninstall tool.

well thats good to know, also why a third party uninstaller? i have an iobit unistaller should i use that?

It's due to a known issue with installation programs. When a game is patched, the information held by the uninstaller log file is no longer correct, and as a result the uninstaller fails to work properly. Iobit Uninstaller should be able to sort it just fine though.

Thanks a bunch, I was considering purchasing 2010. Since I have to uninstall 2009 do you recommend just getting 10 and going from there?

TS2010 is effectively TS2009 SP4 plus extra features and content. One bit of advice though - if buying a digital download version, buy it direct from N3V to avoid patching problems.

Some would say 2010 is 2009 SP5, others would say 2009 SP4 is 2010 beta. Either way you look at it I would go with 2010 simply because it's been debugged more completely than 2009 SP4. I actually bought 2009 after 2010, because it has lower system requirements so I figured it would have smoother framerates than 2010 on older hardware. Then I discovered that none of it works right until you patch to SP4, which changes it to something that's more related to 2010 than to 2009 SP3, and has the exact same performance as 2010.

I would personally say that TS2010 is TS2009 SP4 + the speedtrees, proper layer support, and things like that, without the saving bug that was in TS2009 SP4.

If I get 2010 I will have to reinstall all my content individually or with moving the local file from 09 to 10 work?

Dunno, what I would try is install 2010, patch to latest, then select the \Auran\TS2010 folder and copy it to a backup folder. Then try copying the contents of \TS2009\local\ to \TS2010\UserData\local\ and see if anything blows up. If it does, delete the TS2010 folder and copy the one from the backup in, all fixed. Then you would have to open 2009 content mangler and save all that to CDP to import.

I'm still not sure what I'm gonna do but I'm leaning towards 2010. Will 2010 perform better that 2009 on some what older hardware?

Nope. Probably worse than 2009, due to all the other problems I never did much testing in 2009 original/SP1/SP2/SP3 other than just enough to determine they were completely hopeless, but from what I did check the framerates were okay - until I patched to SP4, at which point the performance and FPS dove off a cliff. Comparing same route, session, train, camera angles, and quality settings in both, TS2009 SP4 and TS2010 give exactly the same performance and framerates.

No - it's only digital download versions that are not direct from N3V that have the patching issues where TS2010 is concerned. As far as I am aware, boxed versions are not affected, and you will only need one patch up to 44088 unless you want the Multiplayer Beta or decide you want the Aerotrain DownLoadable Content.

Either way you might wanna take a squint at this;

Clean up old temp files, empty recycle bin, defrag hard drive, make sure you have enough free space on the drive for the patches to work. Patching takes a lot of space simply because in most cases the patch itself has to be downloaded, then it has to extract all the compressed files inside to a temp folder, swap files in and out comparing them, so while it's running you can easily have 3 times the original installation size temporarily stuffed various places on the disk.
