That's just great... I'm not sure how would the elevated tracks and stations would withstand this one. So far, things are not looking good...

LIRR might also shutdown depending on the storm.

If you live on the East coast like me, prepare for the worst and pray for the best. Right now, I think some of the stations here will either get flooded or destroyed. I hope not...I love the NYCTA...

When I was a kid there was a hurricane that came up the Chesapeake & Delaware bays, and hit Philadelphia pretty darn hard, with 50-60 mph winds ... all that happened was it rained so hard, for such a long time, that the outer course of the house brick facade was saturated, and the inner plaster of the house was actually beaded with moisture ... our house din't get sucked up over the rainbow and thrown into Kansas ... all you will see is massive flooding, and possibly mud ... that is unless you are in low lying areas around creeks ... there you might see utter devistation.

I think the steel girder elevated NYTA trestle will withstand this one. The tunnels may be flooded, and take many days to pump out, replace and restore electrical equipment.

Don't text while driving through high water ... your cell phone insurance plan is void due to internal moisture.

USLW Haaa: What a bunch of Hurricane Force Wind jobs:p

This is a tad different...

I haven't experienced a hurricane of any type ever in my life. I'm not that old (but not too young either :p )to really understand what a hurricane can and can't do. I'm just going from what the "Experts" are saying, that it could cause some serious damage and is the most powerful storm in decades.

Some scary stuff, and if the MTA is in emergency mode preparing for the hurricane, this is definitively something that shouldn't be ignored...

I do believe the the tracks will withstand it, just that there is something in the back in my head telling me that it's going to be worse than what I expect it to be...

Also it's not looking good for the stations that was being rebuilt. Like Elder Ave on the 6 Line...

I just simply pray for the best...for both everybody in Irenes' path and the NYCT...

I think they are really jumping the gun here on premature shutdowns of mass transit ... although it is a weekend ... but if it was just a heavy rain they would operate trains right on through the deluge ... and only then suspend service when flooding is starting to be emminant ...within the hour of flood damage.

There is alot of panicing ... all for a bunch of heavy rain ... and NYC won't see flooding for at least another 12 hours or more.

Silly humans ... stop prematurely panicing and hyping it up !

I pray for all on the East Coast. Btw if your state's governor tells you to get out then do it. I too have a bad feeling it might be worse than Katrina in 2005.

We wasn't told to leave due to our area not prone to flooding and I live in a brick building Lol

If they told us to leave, we wouldn't have anywhere to go anyways so we have no choice to stay...

During a very bad snowstorm on December 26th, 2010, a subway train got stuck on the Rockaway Line, trapping people in the cars for a few hours. I think that MTA isn't taking chances with subway trains during very bad storms.

Just a few hours before she makes a complete land fall over here in Bronx, NY. The rain is coming down like a bath shower. The wind is picking up where were getting gusts of about 40Mph. I didn't step outside but looking at it, I can see part of my street flooding...

Wonder how it really is in Brooklyn and down in some subway stations...

How about when this hurricane blows over, pictures can be posted here of
The damage done by the storm. (Mostly railroads or stations.

reply to hurricane

hello to all: welcome to hurricane alley of mid atlantic states. not really but a good name anyway

where I live we just went through the hurricane a catagory 1 all day saturday through sunday morning about 2:00am. we had about 9.5 inches of rain with winds of 65 to 80 mph from the east. beaches did ok lots of flooding and trees down. and alot of power outages. and right now its windy about 50 to 55 mph from the nw. and sunny down in ocean city. md. I'm abuot 2 hr drive from there. and a travel ban is still in affect for the whole state of delaware. the eye was right over the beaches when it hit.

thats it for the weather from delaware covering the hurricane

brakemen

So far here in the northern part of Jersey, we pretty much had power outages, flooding in lower areas, and a few limbs here and there. Mass transit was shut down at around noon yesterday, as well as the southern half of the Garden State Parkway. Oh, and not to mention, we also had a 5.9 earthquake down in VA earlier this week, so it's pretty much been rough all week.

Rough week ? I think a few downed tree limbs, and a knocked over resin lawn chair is pertty mild ...

What would it be like if you had a typhoon with wind speeds of 180mph and an Earthquake of 8.6 magnitude, like in other parts of the world ... this was a woosie storm, and an earthquake equivilent to that my GF (Irene) walking across the room.

Are you sure that the 23 people killed during the storm, the millions of people without electricity and the people impacted by flooding will agree with your assessment of a.... woosie storm?

Well you do get a lot of hurricanes and tornadeos over there at this time of year. I was stuck in a cat.4 in St.Lucia in 1999!

Could have been alot worse ... like Katrina a (correction: catagory 3), where over (correction: 1836) people were killed ... 23 people are killed by foodborne illness, and an equal amount from the flu and virus, every week in the US, 365 days a year ... Hurricanes are bound to cause some degree of fatalities.

Still it was less than a category 1 hurricane ... or much below ... which was mild by any means.
