How to update VC drivers.

...the sign man
How do I update a video card driver? I got a system check upon launching Trainz and got a warning that my VC drivers are 14-months old. I tried to to update the card via the ATI site and installed the recommended full Catalyst Suite (name?), but I don't think it worked as some of the default SpeedTrees still appear leafless and all I get is black when I try to do an in-game screenshot.

Try running in DirectX instead of Open/GL. I think ATI cards like DirectX format.

Hi Transportfan,

To update your video card driver you must first unistall the old driver. Your computer will still work with no video drivers installed except the default driver in Windows. For your second question (bare trees) change the month in the environment panel, if you change it by about three months you should see a difference.
Screenshots, I have recently discoverd that screenshots do not work if you are using DirectX, you have to be running under OpenGL for them to work.

Screenshots using Nvidia card(s) working fine under both DirectX and OpenGL here. Fully patched to SP3 and not getting any problems other than minor ones.

Strange that - I install updates over the existing driver files and never have any problems.

From where are you downloading your driver updates? I would recommend using http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx, then use Option 1 when you get to the download page.

As for the speedtrees, I don't personally use TS2010, but it sounds like a possible issue with your system - make sure you are running the latest DirectX files. (As my user title states, I can help you if that is an issue)

Hi Clam,

Yes but they don't work, or at least get lost, with an ATI card. I spent about two hours one night looking for screenshots I had taken earlier.
I am fully patched to sp3 my build number is 43434. Maybe this is something Auran should be looking into.

Hi John,
Yes ATI cards like Directx, the performance is better and the graphics are clear and smooth, the only problem is screenshots don't show up.

Hi Shane,

I usually update my graphics drivers from the ATI site and they state that old drivers should be removed before installing the new driver.

As for the speedtrees, as I said change the month in the edit environment tab. If you don't have or don't use 2010 you would not know about this feature.

This is the builtin British Midlands route in Winter, the month is set to January.

This is exactly the same shot in autumn, the month is set to November

I have found that (at least for ATI cards, which I have one of), FRAPS can take the screenshot - on the default settings, it is F10 to take a screenshot.

Hi Shane,

Yes I guessed Fraps would work, but I don't like having lots of free dowloads on my Trains computer, they tend to get in the way a lot. It's not because I don't have enough computing power, I've got plenty. Intel i7 processor @ 2.8 Ghz, running Win 7 64bit, Asus ATI 5870 with 1gig GDDR5, 8 gigs Ram @ 1333Mhz. 1000W modular PSU. That gives me eight cpu cores. This machine is home built, I bought all the parts wholesale and built it myself, which saved me about $1000.

Wow, that thread bump worked!

I know what problem I was having with the screenshots now: I simply tried to paste it directly into my paint program rather than going into my 2010 screenshots folder.

As the screenshot shows, some of the trees responded to the season change (and Trainz was already set to Direct X), but others didn't:
