how to place overhead wires easily

Not really as far as I'm concerned. There are sets of catenary with some being quite complicated with all sorts of tiny insulators, clips, connectors, poles, etc. that can be used. Unless you are well versed in catenary like most of us aren't, it's best to avoid them. The other catenary are splines which are easily dragged, but getting them to line up properly and to look right is a problem at least for me.

Lay the catenary off to the side of the track ... measure the track spline point heights, and apply those heights to the catenary ... then slide the catenary underneath the track spline points

It is a pain. I am working on a large fictional layout now with an electrified line. I am using a catenary spline and keeping the tracks straight and level as much as possible since that is easier. Like cascaderailroad said, using the height tool is important. I also use a catenary height tool <kuid:41462:23996> to get the wires centered over the tracks. The problem is that the catenary splines don't react to the straighten tool, meaning that curves need to be done point by point at regular enough intervals. It can be done, of course, but you need the patience. As JCitron mentioned, there are some insanely detailed kits but they take a lot of time, so I guess it all depends on your level of patience and what compromises you can live with. I also do a lot of trial and error by running a loco with the pantographs up and noting where the wires are too high of low so I can go back and try to adjust them. Unfortunately, many locos in Surveyor default to the pantos being down, so you have to go into Driver to see the results. There are some payware European engines where you can set the pantos to raised in Surveyor. Good luck!

A catenary is purposely set so it zig zags down the rail line ... If it was perfectly straight, down the middle of the gauge, the pantograph high voltage electrical pickups would wear out in no time flat

The loco to use is a French one... "Mistral BB..." Don't have the KUID now but will provide if you can't find it. Pantographs are up in surveyor.

I forgot about the height tool... That really is helpful.

Yes, Cascade, the wire does zigzag down the line, however sometimes it becomes nearly invisible and difficult to adjust because of all the spline points. We definitely need a better way to place cats.
