How do I Make a Train Arrive from a Portal?

As a new user to TrainZ, I have learned how to make a train, driven by an "AL" driver leave the route through a portal. How do I make a new train arrive from a portal? I do not see any command for that in the list of commands.

Also, how would I create a consist for this arriving train? That is, how would I tell TrainZ which cars and locomotives are on this arriving train?

Thank you
Dean

You've set the portal to accept consists, just above that there is produce new trains.
Tick that box, then add consist, starting with locos make your train up. Add a driver at the end and give the commands.
Set the portal to emit trains at 30 min intervals (if that suits your needs).
You might be better off with 2 portals, 1 to produce and 1 to consume.
You can also set a portal to consume and another portal at the other end of the route to emit that same consist after a set time.

You could also try "Quick Portal Manager v3, <kuid2:61392:5012:10>" by PGuy - it's on the DLS.

Once Downloaded you will need to go into your route and from Main Menu "Edit Session" > "Add" > select the rule from the list and add it, then in the "Edit Session" window find the rule and "Edit". You can define the days, times and consists that come from your portals using this. Please note; you must define the consists using the normal Trainz way of creating consists and then update the consist list in the rule.

I concure with itareus. Pguy's QuickPortalManager V3 is the way to go. If you are creating a session with one set of trains coming from a portal, think of that as day one. On the second day, if different consists were to emerge from the portal, your session would be somewhat different. You would also have the option of not having a train emitted on a day by day basis. These options permit some amazing results in session creation.

As Quick Portal, you also have the option of adding trains to the schedule in Driver. You can create the trains in surveyor, enter them in the unscheduled potion of the QuickPortalManager and then in Driver, schedule them as you choose, as needed, whenever the whim stikes you, etc, etc.

You only need one installation of the QuickPortalManager rule to manage all portals on your route.

I use the Portal Timetable Rule by Pguy. I checked out the QuickPortalManager V3 and I'm not sure, but I think you need one for each portal. With the PTR, one takes care of all your portals. You can set up all your portals from one central place. My routes use quite a few portals and it's easier for me, that I can do it from one place. If I'm wrong about the QuickPortalManager V3, please let me know, I'll research into it deeper, and possibly switch.

the QuickPortalManager V3 will easily manage ALL your portals. Just click on the portal name to add more portals. I've used it on several muli-portal routes. There is a ten page manual on how to set it up. Daownload here QuickPortalManagerV2V3 Manual

I would like to keep things simple, so I do not want to download anything special yet. I am trying to understand what Fran1 is saying. How do I set a portal to accept consists?

In surveyor find the portal. Using the objects tab click on the ? then on the portal track. 2 options, consume or produce. Tick the one you want.

Not just any Portal, but Portal, Portal Basic or Portal Basic HP. Portal Basic Short has some problems. Re-Rail Portal Basic will emit a train that has been derailed anywhere on your route as well as emit strings of cars without an engine (which can be useful). The CMTM Portal is unique to the CMTM Car Destination System. DO NOT use unless you are also implimenting the CMTM SYstem.

If you use a Basic Portal you can set it to emit a train periodically. The period is selectable in minutes and you can create a list of trains that are taken from any consists you have created and saved. You have no other control of timing.

If you want to control a specific time a single train is emitted, then you need a Portal Manager, of which the QuickPortalManager is the best.

Some awesome info there Thanks I learned something that has been giving me grief on my route... so ditch the short portals I have been using LOL ...

Thank you, especially Fran1 and Dap. I will try your methods.

I had wondered what AL meant. I guess it really is AI. As has been said many times on this forum, the manual that comes with TrainZ is almost worthless. It hardly explains anything. I am glad I have all of you to ask a lot of questions.

Then i went to edit session, edit session rule and added 2 passengers trains to this rule setting them up the same as the other ten trains (engine car car so on)now when i go to drive and waite for the passengers trains to show one comes out then gose back in the portal.
I go check the other portal and that train has backed out of the portal and has no commands that i gave it in PTR.
Any help would be greatful.

In regard to Portals, Accept trains is usually ticked by default. When you tick produce a train a window will open giving two choices, either make up a consist from data base or to use an existing consist from the consist tab (which you can edit) The built in consists (2010) do not have locomotives just rolling stock. I suggest that you experiment with making up a few small consists and then set them up in the portals. There you can assign a driver to the consist and give him/her commands to follow. The best way to learn is by trial and error. You will get the hang of it in no time.

Danny,

Tom is right. Create your trains in Surveyor under the Consist button and save them. This way you can make sure that all cars in headed the right direction and then the locomotie is on the front and then there are no defective cars. Once it is created in Surfeyor, put it on the route and go to driver to make sure it works properly. Then go back to Surveyor and load it into your Portal Timetable rule. Trying to create a consist using the Portal Manager does not always catch these errors.
