True New York Central Fan
I am a huge railfan and my life practicaly revolves around railroads(ask anyone in my family and they will agree) And by the way HAPPY NATIONAL TRAIN DAY!!! And I was thinking I know how I am going to celebrate National Train Day, but how would others celebrate???

Currently I am inside the Calera Depot at the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum babysitting a presentation on NARP's proposed system expansion of Amtrak (of course, the whole thing hinges on an increase in funding/income, so it's stuck atm... :p )

Check it out, it's a good way to imagine the future.

National Train Day?
Is this an American thing?
Can't say I'd be excited if they brought something like that in over here.

There are much more deserving things than Trains that deserve recognition.

  • Kylie Minogue's Rear Day
  • Homer Simpson Day
  • Xbox Live Day
  • Rock Day
  • Lager Day
If you put all them into one, then that would be one hell of a day.
You'd probably need another day off to recover though.

Happy errr.. National Train Day though. :hehe:

Smiley.

The answer to your question is yes it is a very american celebration, for train entusiusts. It was on this day May 10, 1869 world's first transcontenental railroad was completed and that is the main reason, coincedentaly, the same day in 1893 NYC's 999 reached an unconfermed 112.5 mph (180kph) making it in many american eyes the first object on wheels to excede 100mph (160kph):)

I did not know that. But did you know the first object on wheels that I made excede 100mph (160kph) was a 1977 Chrysler New Yorker.:hehe:

Made me smile there Smileyman. Very often folk forget this is an international activity and there is life elsewhere. We are perhaps very much more fortunate in the UK than our cousins across the pond in that we have still got a fairly extensive pasenger rail system whereas in America it is a skeleton of what it once was.

Obviously we hope your national train day in you country goes well and I too think we don't really need one here?

If anyone wants to celebrate the incompetence of some parts of the UK rail netowrk, then that is up to them. I'm happy just thinking of it as it was...[goes misty eyed]

Well I can appreciate part of what you say. I could go all misty-eyed when I recall that this great city of Glasgow here once had the second biggest tramway outside of London. I despair when I think of the name Dr Beeching and his rail review decades ago and those who were deprived of rail. However in some polaces people didn't bother with a line until it was listed for closure. However we still have a fairly widespread railway. Here in Scotland we have had lines reappearing taken out by Beeching in the 60's. The Greater Glasgow area has probably the most extensive suburban layout outside London and UK-wide more people are using the railways than in the State run years from 1948 to recently. My suburban eletrics are now running faster and more to the timetable.

I am aware there are black spots on the map but I am not going to be as pessimistic as yourself. I once had a timetable book for the railroads of the US given to me and was of the mid-1950's and when you look at how decimated rail is in the US compared to us we are doing not too badly. There is no comparision even in proprtion.

  • Atomic Bear Hunting Day

Well, the cake is a lie in the first place, No cake for you, meanie.

And Smileyman, the way people are here, count that two days. ;)

Actually, it's a Japanese thing (mid-October). We're having trouble getting our trains to work properly, so we're emulating them.
It was a choice of making Amtrack run on time or having a party, and the party looked like it would be more fun.
