Historic railways

well,I remember,there was the Southern Railroad,who merged with the Norfolk &Western to form the Norfolk Southern railroad company and there was the New york Central who merged with the pennsylvannia railroad which created a failed company called penn central,then came conrail after that,CSX and NS split the assets between the two companies!

There's also the Boston & Maine, which merged with two other historical railroads - the Maine Central and Delaware and Hudson. The B&M and MEC have remained together as PanAm Railways, which was Guilford Transportation Industries before that. The D&H was sold off to the CP after entering Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Also let's not forget the New Haven, which became part of the amalgamation called PennCentral, and was obliterated into Conrail.

There are many more, this is only a few. Today there are very few original railroads left. What we have today are the remnants of many mergers with only a handful of companies left.
