Help with Signals

I'm trying to signal the station pictured using upper quadrant UK signals. However I just cannot figure out how to do it correctly, whatever I try causes a consist to stick at one or other junction. Can anyone suggest which signal(s) I should use and where they need to be placed.

As it is not particularly clear from the image I will try to explain the layout top to bottom:

topmost = station platform 1
2nd = station platform 2
3rd = station platform 3
4th = storage yard
5th = storage yard
6th = short spur for shunting loco

The arrows show where the junctions are. All lines have buffer stops at the end.

I assume that you have a single line on the approach to the station area. If this is the case you should not have any signals on the single track only on the leaving tracks from the yard or stations. Any signal on the single line may come into conflict with an inbound train taking control of the line and junctions and preventing a train from leaving the area.

That is correct, a single line feeds the station area. So should the individual signals be placed facing the station or facing the single line at the entrance to each branch?

Place them facing the single line as this is the section you need to control. This would prevent an AI train from entering the single line to one of the tracks if another train was already on that track but would still allow a train to enter the single line to a vacant track.

Are distant signals ok on the single line, they would indicate the position of the home signal at the next passing loop?

Any signal on a single line will allow a train to enter that part of the line before it and could then cause a stand off between trains. If you have loops you can place signals on the loop tracks. Some of the new scripted signals may allow for signals on a single line.
