Help with a DEM

Can anyone get me a DEM from Wales, AK, USA to Uelen, Russia via the Bering Strait that includes the Diomede Islands? I can't afford TransDEM and MicroDEM gives me error after error... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

First, Congrats on 500. Second, don't ask for help here they'll laugh and make fun of your request. :o

That is not true. We help people all the time to help themselves do THEIR OWN work.

But seriously....

Helping with a DEM is difficult. The files are really, really, huge now, and the person doing the DEM finding never finds everything the other person wants or needs. It is best that Amtrak purchase his own copy. Yes, he said he can't afford it, but a few chores around the house maybe and he can ask his parents to purchase it for him. It's only about $32.00 for the latest version.

That best thing is to make this into a collaborative project then everyone can work on some aspect of the route. But the problem with this project is it may be a bit out in the left field for a lot of people to be interested in.

Here :) If you ask only for a DEM, it is okay lol. But if you ask for someone who should build a route for you within the next 3!! years, THAT is not really ok...it's just funny :p

EDIT: John was faster :hehe:

The problem is that it's a download, it was hard enough to convince them payware downloads were safe... they just refuse to buy a program that is a download...

Roland is a very decent guy, and very trust-worthy. He provides top-notch customer service and support, your parents need not worry about the transaction on his part, however, I do understand their concerns.
-I think if you or your parents sent him a personal communication, he might very well work with you, possibly providing a physical disc.

Can't hurt to send him an email and ask.

To make a DEM map of the sea floor (a Bering Straight Chunnel) would be how many hundereds of miles long ?

Like 10,000 baseboards ?

And too it would get kinda boring driving a lengthly sub sea floor tunnel route.

I like the idea though ... someone else had the idea to make a US to Europe route.

I was thinking more of a bridge... And the shortest cross-span is 53 miles wide(with an intermediate stop at the Diomede Islands)...

That water is some of the roughest in the world ... doubtful that a chunnel would be feasable on the prototype as the earths techtonic plates are always moving in that area, and earthquakes are constant.

the bridge would still need supports and those supports would still be under the same stresses if it were a tunnel. 85km would be quite a boring trip lol. Good luck in finding a DEM maker

Yes, but there is water to absorb the movement of a bridge and if they can make parts of San Francisco move with the earth I think they can get a bridge to...

The big problem there is the ice, as well as quakes, this has been talked about in documentaries, is cost prohibitive and practically not worth it,
Cheers,
Mike

I still support the project, as you could use 2 "Chunnel" type tunnel portals, with Portals, or iPortals ... or have 2 routes ... or have 1 route separated by a water filled baseboard, or a vacant space where a connecting baseboard would be ... and send Trainz to each US/RU terminal.

Who cares if building a connection between Russia and the US via that area is not technically realistic? If AMTRAKwannebe turns it into a nice looking route (via the islands?) for all our joy, all is fun :Y:.
... if he can get his parents so crazy to buy a copy of the DEM program.
