What about a HELP! forum page?

Replace the forums with a Wiki page. Your problem will be solved.

Dave......

Hi there - There are Wiki pages already but when I looked at them, many had no content at all.

I agree that Wiki pages would make searching easier, I have tried searching threads and don't seem to be doing it right because I often don't find what I am looking for.

What I would like is a Master Index of all Rules and Driver Commands for a start. Having a slow internet connection makes it difficult to search the DLS for all rules if it can be done at all. Any tips welcome.

I would like to contribute to Wiki pages dealing with how to use various rules and driver commands, especially the correction of spelling, grammar and semantics, as some contributors are challenged in those areas.

What do you think? Yes, I mean you!

I think I was giving Jayturf a little light hearted teasing.

As for the Wiki, I find it useless. If you want to add to it, go ahead. Something is better than the blank pages it has now.

If you want to contribute to the Wiki; here is the official one:
http://online.ts2009.com/mediaWiki/index.php5/Main_Page
simply log in using your Planet Auran ID (same as the DLS & Forums) and contribute. The more people we have contributing the more content there is and (hopefully) the more useful it will be.

For Technical support there is also the Helpdesk Support system and I believe you can add fixes and such there by sending a message containing your fix to the helpdesk.

Thank goodness you know everything.

I normally do read messages titled help to see if I can do just that. If it's one that is stupidly simple, has been asked dozens of times and doesn't mention having searched for an answer, I make that suggestion. If they have searched, I try to help. I have done the same thing myself on a few occasions.

Good help is where you find it. This Forum is always a great place to start. Hopefully you will receive more constructive posts.

Cheers

AJ

The only problem I have with HELP threads is when that is the title, we have all seen them "HELP" and thats all in the title, or even "having trouble", even if it is solved how is the search function going to find a thread about, lets say "opengl crashing", when the thread is titled "IT CRASHED HELP"
The use of a description in the thread title will get help a lot quicker and enable the search function to find it easier.

Just my 2c (plus tax) worth.

Cheers David

Snippet: Newflash...posting HELP makes people not want to read or help. try the search function...it actually works and there is more than 6 years worth of info on here.

Maybe you would be kind enough to explain what you mean by this. The search function on this forum is so bad it's impossible to find anything without spending several hours looking. Try typing "3D" and see how you go.

I wrote to the help desk some time ago to have the forum search updated to something half useful, but I was basically told "We don't have time to do it". There is a full (and I mean full) Boolean search available, but in the older version of vBuletin used on this forum, some hacking is required. Until the search facility is updated, please accept Help messages, but when it does happen, I can assure you that the Help messages won't stop.

I find it's quicker to use Google and search on Trainz+"whatever the problem is" nine times out of ten I find the answer in here.

I agree. I raised that suggestion over a year ago, but like everything else on these forums the thread was eventually lost in the abyss.

HELP!!! I NEED TO LEARN HOW TO DO THIS RIGHT NOW!!! PLEASE RESPOND!!!!

I saw the "HELP!!!" posts and called 911, the police and fire departments claim that it's not life or death whether or not some instant gratification kid gets an answer quickly. :hehe:

You see that on other forums too, mostly young kids who use CAPSLOCK AND LOTS OF !!!!!!!!! and "PLEASE ANSWER!!! IMPORTANT!!!" thinking they'll get answers more quickly that way. Personally I do tend to ignore them more often than not, eventually they'll grow up and learn some patience so there's no point in trying to pound it into them. After all, do they really need to learn patience RIGHT THIS MINUTE!!!!!? :p

I don't see the point of putting someone down just because they asked for help. Some of us did not come out of the box with a "help" index tab instead of a navel.

How about if you personally don't like the help messages you don't click on them. I have seen many people get help here on the forums if they explain the problem and what they have tried to do to fix it.

This community is only as good as it's member and lately I have been ashamed to say I am a member of it. People wanting things made without a simple please and thank you, people posting that Help messages shouldn't be posted, People telling others there must be something wrong with them if they like and support whatever version of trainz they are using.

This forum use to be a pretty closeknit group and everyone knew common courtesy. It is a joke now and I am sick of seeing it. I rarely read this forum anymore and it is a shame because I know I am not nearly the only one that feels that way. For those that post here on a regular basis, get it through your thick heads. NO one cares about your opinion. Now I am not talking about everyone here that posts a lot, but if your reading this and getting mad or wondering if I am talking about you then there is a good chance that I am.

Enjoy what we have and try using some courtesy. I know that may be a difficult concept for some but look it up on google.

I am off once again to get some more civil reading on other forums.

....help...with help...or withheld...

 I have to say if I see "help" or "having trouble" in their misspelled or caps-locked variants, I just pass by because if the pop-up preview window that shows the first sentence doesn't reveal the problem, then the problem probably is not well defined.:o

I throw a link in for newbies, on how to use the forums daily that stresses the FAQ's pages & search, etc with pictures, mainly to speed the processes of searching & eliminating duplicate posts.:D

Basically the fact of using the Forum Search & taking hours to find anything increases knowledge that in fact is required for using Trainz in general...;)

...in other words, people just won't do their homework...! :hehe:

But if key words are present in the title & I have experience, I may try to help...that's how I get help...:p

I for one never have a problem with helping anyone on the forum if I possible can. And yes some of the younger members can be a nuisance at times but they are kids. I have brought up three of them myself (I am 60), so know what they are like. This is supposed to be a community of like minded trainz fans not a forum for grumpy old codgers who would not help a three legged dog across the road.
I have had invaluable help off the forums and they are a handy tool when you get stuck. I am a retired network and pc support manager and even I get stuck some times never mind a young child learning everything from the start. So what if they ask someone to help now and then? Cut them a bit of slack guys.

Smile it will not hurt you.

What I get offended about is people, even Trainzers, get offended MUCH to easily. Some seem to go out of thier way to be so.:o
