Height, Crossing, Traffic Control Questions

I'm new at this and looking for advice on 4 current issues.

1. I have been looking at Pre-Packaged Layouts and noticed that in many cases the baseline height looks like it is anywhere from 40 to 70 mm above the baseboard level. Is there some reason for this?? I certainly want to take advantage of others lessons learned.

2. I tried a small layout to familiarize myself with program functionality and tools. I installed a gated crossing but the gates do not close when the train approaches. Autos run into and through the train. The crossing is located near a turn-out. I'm I violating a rule?

3. Is there a way to control Carz traffic at an intersection? Perhaps I'm asking too much. I know I have no clue, yet, of what's important.

4. Is there a way to run a train in Surveyor to check track placement? Currently I save, exit and go to driver.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

1. This puzzles me too!

2. Make sure the track is connected to the crossing - it sounds obvious but is easy to miss! (same for the road)

3. I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but the cars always turn left (right for America and other countries which drive on the right side of the road), so you can make complex road networks by manipulating this.

Another thing to bear in mind is andi06's street kit - you can use the tram crossings with the AJS Traffic Controller to control traffic lights at cross-roads. There are full instructions on his website (http://www.ajsmith.nildram.co.uk/trs/index.shtml).

4. No, but what I often do is create a long rake of Mk1s (a good gauge for British layouts) and just push them using the 'move' tool. Naturally, in the US you would need to use something larger to make sure it clears track-side obsticles.

Quite a few members advise going into Driver (there's a quick-link at the top of Surveyor) just to get a general feel for the route anyway.

In '04, you can press alt+WALK to walk around the layout, but I don't know how to do this in '06 :(.

hi in 2006 alt-u and alt-y can be used to negotiate the map in surveyor much easier, 1 is walk and 1 is fly, cant remember off the top of my head, very good for taking screenshots as well (press prtscn, then go to program files/auran/trs2006/screenshots)

I installed a gated crossing but the gates do not close when the train approaches. Autos run into and through the train.

Some crossings, such as those by Cloaked Ghost, work fine in TRS2004, but do not work, ie close the gates in TRS2006. I also remember reading in here several years ago that if the first road spline point was too close to the connecting spline point at the crossing the cars would not stop properly. I always try to move my first spline point as far as I can from the gate, terrain allowing.

I also have the problem with cars not stopping when the spline point is too close to the crossing. This is a bear of a problem when the crossing is next to an intersection, but if you can't avoid it, at lest it doesn't hurt anything. I just assume those must be the ghosts of drivers who tried to beat the train.:D
