Having trouble with track/road crossings

Hey Y'all;

What little secret am I ignorant of?

Having trouble with track/road crossings as the road hookup points come out below ground level when crossing is at ground level.

Here's what I mean http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa309/FSW4picts/TRAINZ/IMG_4216.jpg

Have tried straighten road spline, tried tinkering with ground level under crossing.
Best I can get it to come out with is only last 3 meters or so of road before crossing disappearing below ground.

I gotta be missing something somewhere.
What am I missing?

no,I don't think you are missing anything,it was just probably the way the road was laid out,try deleting the road and track but not the crossing itself and try again laying out first the road once you think you have it above the ground and for the railroad tracks,do the same thing, good luck!;)

Hi,

I have the same problem myself with level crossings. I can't be absolutely certin, but my guess is that it has something o do with attachment points on the crossing, as well as the road being used. The best solution i have found is to insert a spline point as close as possible to the level crossing as possible, then raise that to the desired height, straightening the small section at the join, which generally gives the desired result.

In Surveyor, with the objects/splines tab open and splines selected, click on the bottom where it says "advanced". The tab will extend downward, and among other things four small circles will appear; (l to r) adjust spline height, add spline point, delete spline point, and smooth spline.

You can either add a spline point in the sunken area and raise it, or try the smooth spline selection, which should drop the ground down under the roadway.

This is all to do with the road that you are using and not the crossing. As most roads need to be lowered so as the cars on them don’t float above the road. Most crossings take this into account; so the attachment points for roads tend to be below ground. Your best bet is to experiment with different roads until you find one that will work with the crossing that you are using. I am building a set of roads and crossings that overcome this problem.

Have fun

My method is to clone the road I am using and set the carrate to zero.
Connect the crosssing to the nearest spline point with an invisible road, then fill in the gap with the cloned road taking care not to join it to the spline point. It works and looks fine but can be a bit fiddly But I think the extra care is worth it.

Even easier. Use the YARN or BNSF series of roads. They work well with the BNSF series of railroad crossings.

The Yarn roads are nice and thick so the cars don't look like they float above the surface. Clem's crossings can be modified by clicking on the ? to change the surface from tar to rubber or wood.

When placing crossings, I find it's easiest to get the road and tracks in place then "cut" in the grade crossing.

Where the road crosses the tracks, place two spline points on each side of the track.

Do the same with the track.

Locate the crossing you want, place it on top of the track, and rotate it to match the track crossing.

Now cut the road spline in between the two spline points you made earlier.
Connect the road to the crossing.
Repeat with the track.
