How long does it take to make a nice 15 minute route with a few working industries?
Been trying the surveyor last couple evenings, last nite I was overwhelmed, tonite, not as much but wow, maybe if I had some photoshop or 3d modeling experience it would help but, wow, quite the learning curve ahead for me.
Must take many many hours to make the dlc that I got from the Store this past weekend.
So to all you Trainz makers, creators, a bit hats off to your talents and also a big Thank you for the information I am finding on the forums.

They all have my vote too, and I am sure we won't have to recount the votes or crook the books here to get them all to win this one :)

I have been working on a 21 mile route (based on the Mount Hood Railway) for just over a month now. I have just finished primary 3D placement and still have to put in operational items such as signals, speed limits, small detail (lamp posts, stop signs, clutter etc) and test it. So you can probably reckon on around 6 weeks in total, working on average two hours a day.

So it's not a quick process, though better in Trainz than the other sims.

You could make a single baseboard with around 6 miles of track. That would take around 15 minutes to drive at an average speed of 24mph.

The result might look a bit cramped, but on the 720x720m single baseboard it is entirely achievable with enough loops and sidings. Much of it could be hidden from view from other parts of the track by landscaping.

It would be a good opportunity to develop track laying, landscaping, texturing and asset placement skills. Small is probably best to begin with. I made the mistake of going too big on my first one (92 baseboards!), and I'm still going back to improve large areas of it as and when I've learned new technques.

I reckon it would be possible to do a basic, completely finished route, in around three hours with practice and experience. However, when starting out it will take a good while longer, simply because there is so much to learn.

Keep at it though. Most route builders learn something every day, however long they’ve been at it. To me, that is a reflection of how powerful and rewarding Trainz can be. You are only limited by your imagination!

I say hats off to all you Trainz Consumers! It would be pretty boring to be making content for nobody! Thanks to everyone that's ever downloaded any content from anywhere!

Golly..I started my own route loooonnnngg ago, but between trainzing , rubbernecking on the forum and downloading all the goodies I got lost - it is really not something one can just jump into and perform, it is challenging indeed. Fun is BIG though and work comes second at the moment for me . So yes , the guys whose object it is to serve the community passed the test with flying colours..colors...My english, grammar and manners also improved , so thanks guys !

I don't know about that, I make heaps of content just for me, and its certainly not boring.:hehe:

But I know what ya saying.

Cheers

Lots

The routes that are available for Trainz seem unlimited. I have so many excellent routes on my HD now, I probably will never get to all of them in months and months.

So many routes, so little time....

Did manage to make a 3 square map with a couple sidings, small river, few houses, texture decisions take me forever, size of, direction, so many options with everything. This is quite the challenging software, dont mean to date myself but for gr 12 graduation I received a electric typewriter, which at the time just rocked. lolol

Was it an IBM Selectric?

That's my Mom in 1967 enjoying her birthday present - too bad she died in 82, she would have really enjoyed computers.

My Trainz bible;

http://trains.0catch.com/tutorial.html

Covers most of what's needed to lay track, configure signals, and set up AI traffic.

Trainz is much easier to make a layout on than RW is but its something I will leave to the professionals. +1REP to all you content makers. Just noticed this was my first post and I have been registered since 2006 :'(

I just spent the afternoon riding on the Riverside RR CO TS12, with Ben Neals Steam Engines, 14 of them I believe. The scenery is unreal, bridges, rivers, industries, AI steam engine traffic all over, and now that I am a bonofide Steam Engine Driver in Cab mode, I piloted a N & W Class J 600 Locomotive which was great looking and drove like a dream. What a fun way to spend an afternoon, and it all was free ware. Think I am going to change my Avatar to a Steam Engine now, cause I am hooked.

"Trainz is much easier to make a layout on than RW" I had the exact opposite experience, for me Trainz is less intuitive, took longer to figure out, and altho I've managed to beat the tracklaying tool into submission I still can't love it after two years. Problem with RW is I LOVE their world editor, if it could make coffee I would marry it - but since the AI traffic is hopelessly useless none of it matters, once you create your beautiful route you can't DO anything with it other than admire the scenery and take Awesome Screenshots. Trainz to me feels like trying to lay HO flextrack in an insane asylum with some nut coming up behind me to rip out the spikes on the previous section to bend it into what HE thinks is an appropriate curve to match the section I'm aligning now, if the blasted thing would just let ME lay the track and quit trying to "help" I'd never need the straighten tool in the first place. But of course once that hurdle is overcome, complex heavy AI traffic is a breeze.

SCM Electra (Smith Corona).

Still have my mother, very fortunate, longevity in the family tree, hope it rubs off, should get a handle on the editor if it does.

That is a great link also, thanks. I have migrated from the Flight Sim generas, there I bought 3rd party add ons to place scenery, totally a no brainer compared to the blank square I saw the first time I looked at "Create a route", my jaw dropped, and I said, Holy you got to do everything.

I think the Railworks versus Trainz debate is starting to get really old on this forum.... You catch my drift..... ????
