I watch a lot of those true crime shows and have noticed that the "go to" shot they display while the narrator is talking is almost always of train tracks, or a freight train going through a crossing. I realize that crime does occur in those areas, but does everyone associate crime with trains?
Has anyone noticed how ubiquitous trains are in certain TV shows?

I think most people associate railroad property with crime, or at least the opportunity for crime. Most such areas are zoned for heavy industry or as commercial, in the US anyway. They tend to be deserted outside of business hours and even during daylight there aren't many watchful eyes about. Those who are there have other business to take care of or tend to be the type that would cut your arm off to get your watch if they thought no one was looking. I found this to be true even in smaller railroad towns like Modesto or Turlock, as they were when I lived there.

Well; take this for what it's worth. Train City USA. Fostoria, Ohio. The railroads run 24/7 all through town; which we all know, they are not the quietest visitors. This has caused the area near the tracks to become low value property. Unfortunately while this can be good news for a family willing to put up with the noise, it also attracted many drug addicts who blow a good portion of money on drugs. This in turn attracts dealers, and it just goes from there.

I know that 'stowaways' ( if it is the correct description ) make use of rolling stock to cross borders, hide from the law, free transport to and from destinations etc. These characters are often lone rangers carrying the bare nescessaties and stealing whatever they need from where ever to survive from day to day.Sometimes they work in pairs , one would for example pull the coupler open so the train will stop, and his mate can get on further back. They know train movements like the back of their hands too.
