Great news from Washington

I'm not sure this is in the right place, but I have to post it. Microsoft has announced a replacement for the Windows Vista debacle. They're calling it Windows 7, and from reading between the lines, it appears they are beginning to recognize, though they won't actually admit, that the function of an operating system is to operate a computer, not frustrate a user.

Let's hope and pray they got the picture anyhow.

Written on a Vista SP1 monster.

Vista Problems

I have never had any other Opperating System other than Vista. Please explain why it is so greatly criticized, such as: "bloated"...etc.

I have a 3GB Ram, and 500 MB hard drive desktop PC, and had absolutely no problem installing Trainz, even without disabling my firewall and Norton antivirus. It operates flawlessly. Had I put off purchasing a PC for another year I would have been able to get a 7GB Ram PC for the same price.

Whats wrong with Vista ?

I really don't understand everyone's issues with vista. I currently have a desktop with XP and a laptop with Vista, and i prefer using the laptop, and rarely use the desktop now. I have only 2 complaints about vista, and they're just about the start bar.

Remember that XP got similar reactions to vista when it first came out, and look how popular it is now.

All my data going to a cloud somewhere.....hmm, clouds are vapor, right? Think I'll sell the last of my Mr Softie shares now.

XP was good because it was designed for the average user, if you wanted a really tech-savvy version for those with technical knowledge and liked to get into the details of how things worked, you could get NT instead.
Vista came out and appears not jsut to have tried to replace XP but NT also. There was no continuation of NT or seperate replacement for it. Vista also appears to have been made with the belief that the average user had some knowledge that Network Administrators had, knowledge that not everyone has and some just don't have the time or desire to learn. Doing this took away the ease of use for the average user that XP and previous versions (2000, 98, 95, etc) had. Complicating things doesn't help.
And I think some are afraid of this: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/icons
As for this cloud stuff, unless they learn to not let rain/snow into tunnels I don't see that helping.:p
Anyone want Windows RG? http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/winrg :hehe:

Not really new news as Windows 7 has been in development for some time and has been discussed in the computing press. If I understand correctly, the complete rewrite has been abandoned and it is now being based on the Vista engine.

Hello all,

I just did a forum search and found 500 threads dealing with some issue with Vista or another. Not being able to use a program, programs doing weird things, that sort of thing. These only go back to late March 2008. I assume there are more going back further, but that total results are limited to 500, a suspiciously round number. That's about 2 or 3 Vista threads a day for forum users, let alone those who don't participate in the forum but are having their own problems and may have given up on Trainz in the belief it is the application, not the operating system that is at fault.

For me, that is the final answer to "what's wrong with Vista?" The operating system is supposed to operate the computer and run the applications, not become a career in itself. Has anyone seen the latest Mac TV ad? I think Microsoft knows they are in trouble. They lost sight of the fact that computers have fallen into the hands of people like me whose attitude is like their attitude toward their car: They want to operate a computer without having to know all of the minutiae of the operating system.

If Detroit had produced cars like Vista, we'd all still be riding trains. Oh wait! That's not a bad thought. :D

Well lets see, Wat is wrong with Vista?
I think its more What is wrong with Microsoft...
Windows is just a huge boat, it takes up so much resources just to run and then once you try to run and install software it just gets slower and slower.
My PC is XP based and takes over 7 minutes to boot up and load all the stuff it needs to in order to do anything And yes I keep it clean, defrag and remove anything that I don't need and clean out the registry regularly.
The Mac is much more user friendly and if software wont run properly on the Mac Apple fixes the issue not the supplier of the software. Ya, you pay more for a Mac but you get what you pay for.

I use an old Amiga computer that does multitasking far better than any windows based machine ever has, only uses 16mb of ram, and the OS only takes up 10mb of hard drive space. It is still running today 15 years later.

First, you have a 3GB RAM and 500 MB hard drive. Even basic computers have 1GB of RAM now, because Vista won't run well on any less than that. It takes a huge amount of resources just to run Vista, leaving very little to run applications unless your computer is at least twice as potent as an XP computer.
I have a total of 768MB of RAM and it runs XP plus some fairly hefty programs. The purpose of an operating system is to operate the computer so that you can run other programs, not take over all the computer's capacity so you can't run other programs.
Vista does a lot of very fancy, very decorative, and very unnecessary functions that contribute nothing to the operation of the computer.
Ironically, if it did a lot less, it would be easier to run and more reliable and greatly improve the operation of the average computer. You could run more impressive routes if more resources went to operating Trainz and less to operating Vista. And Microsoft could maintain the same bloated profiteering margins while undercutting the pirate software sales with a lower price.
But then you would lose the shimmering rainbow colored windows that make the rubes go "Ooh, how pretty!"
(I shouldn't have said that. Now the next version will have shimmering windows.)

P.S. I actually prefer Win98, but it won't run Google Earth.

Hello Claude,

I agree with you except in one respect. The rubes have figured out that it is bogus. Now Microsoft will have to come up with something real.

Ahh...that's too bad...

 The only thing about Vista is that Microsoft assumed that Americans would actually read simple instructions on how to use Vista!

Vista Premium makes WindowsXP look like grammer school software...

Hi All
This debate could go on forever.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. MS brought out Vista to early, they were still updating XP when it was released.
An OS should be just that. Running silently and unobtrusively in the background, using as fewer computer resources as possible.
That's my two pence worth
Cheers
Pete.

I still use windows 2000. No problems really...my best friend (who has a computer software engineering degree) assured me it would be quite stable and fairly easy to use. I'm still using it 5 years later...

I suppose I'll get around to using XP or something eventually.

I think someone else in the threads put it perfectly. When microshaft first releases something to the public, it's really an alpha version, which then requires a beta patch :hehe: and after a few patches then it becomes it's *intended* version.

You could even argue that trainz is the same way in theory. I use '04 but that had 4 service packs applied to it right? '06 had at least 1. TC 1 & 2 SHOULD have had at least one service pack applied to it but I don't want to stoke the fire...

This is why I'll wait a bit until the price drops and the bugs are worked out of '09/x

What program, game or OS has been released that did not have updates?

 I would have recommended upgrading to WindowsXP...until Vista SP1 was released...

The major problem with Vista has always been User Accounts Control(UAC). If you have a major anti-virus Internet software, you can delete the UAC.

TRS2006 will be with us always. '06 works better when installed to File C:/TRS2006. This installation breaks Vista's requirement for permissions that causes delays especially using CMP & Paint Shed.

Hi All

Bernie:
Not sure these days, it changes by the Second :) , about 1 cent I guess. :hehe:

All
My only gripe about Vista is its too bloated, all OS's have components that few people use, they are made to suit the masses, it took me about two weeks to get XP the way I like it, getting rid of files I'll never use, including 90% of the built in fonts.
Vista will take a lot longer.
I'll have to upgrade sooner or later, I have enough physical room left for one more Gig of Ram. After that (unless they develop a super chip and alter XP to take more than 3.5 Gigs), its goodbye computer.

Cheers All
Pete.

Must be a remarkable computer since you are able to install Vista, Norton AV and Trainz on a 500MB hard drive.....

It would be wiser to install trainz onto a seperate hard drive. Keep the OS on one and trainz on another so they don't bottleneck each other as much. :)

Hi Gisa,
That's a very good point.
Without sounding like a sales executive, if anyone is thinking about buying a new computer, the Compaq range now contains two HD's. One smaller capacity for Fat, and the other for NTFS. There may be other makes as well, its worth considering when looking around
Cheers
Pete.

PS: I haven't got shares in Compaq; Honest. :)

I have Vista and XP and do enjoy both of them. Some older games and programs that were crashing often in XP, runs like a charm in Vista. On the other hand - some applications simply refuse to install in Vista, so I've got to have both OS's. For me Trainz runs equally good in either one.

Vista is honest, if it can run an app it does it well, otherwise it says; No can do! It's somewhat difficult to learn a new OS and Vista handles things in another way than XP, so it's a challange.

Soon we'll get Windows 7 - and have to learn all over again... ;)
