GPUs which brand is best?

Nvida no longer supports clutter. Does this mean AMD or Intel GPUs are worth looking at?

Goodbye Turf, Hello Clutter: As we embrace the next step in Trainz development with DirectX 12, we’re saying farewell to the NVIDIA Turf system. With NVIDIA no longer supporting Turf, it’s time to move forward and focus on the next evolution of effect layers: Clutter. Clutter is the natural successor, offering greater flexibility, improved performance, and expanded possibilities for effect layers.

Thanks John

@johnwhelan - I do believe you mis-read the statement, my friend.

and clutter is part of directx12 or another nVidia specific solution?

Thanks John

Clutter is N3V's way of doing the same sort of effects that Nvidia's Turf Effects does but without being dependent on using an Nvidia card. So users with AMD cards or Intel cards will have the same experience as users with Nvidia cards. While DX12 makes Clutter possible, it isn't a feature of DX12 as far as I know. To be completely honest, supporting DX12 is a requirement to run on the XBox platform.

Which brings us back to the original question it's now just 3D score and the brand no longer matters unless you're using a layout that uses turf effects in which case do the latest nVidia GPUs support it?

When I started the scenery on my latest route (NSW Main Western Line) I had an NVidia GTX1660ti and it supported TurfFX, which I applied liberally. I then had a major computer problem due to a power surge and eventually got going again with an AMD RX7600 and, to my surprise, I was still able to apply TurfFX to the route. That card developed problems of its own and I now have an nVidia RTX4060. I would highly recomend nVidia graphics cards for Trainz and with the 5000 series having launched, there will be savings on the 4000 series cards.

So Nvidia is still the first choice for Trainz? But what about AMD or Intel, is their performance really so miserable?
I think it depends on your requirements.

Many users are happy with a 3D score of 10,000, if you want super high detailed shadows then 25,000 is more realistic.

So the Intel arc 580 at $160 for 8 gigs or $300 for 16 gigs of memory hits the lower end. Intel drivers don't have the best reputation.

The RX 7600 is worth a mention but the nVidia cards run cooler per 3d score so if you're on a tight budget sort of anything but otherwise I'd still go nVidia.

Cheerio John

The RTX 4070 would be my choice but it might be worth waiting a week or two for the RTX 5070 if only as it is supposed to run cooler and be cheaper.

John
Just wondering, isn't the price about the same as the RTX 5070? Might as well get that extra bit of performance at about the same price.

Well my card is an RTX4080 and, yes, it does support Turf, but I guess the issue is that future cards won't? This is a dilemma for route builders - do we include TurfFX layers or not?

Not a dilemma since Clutter support is what N3V is going with, moving forward. I'm thinking a different grass method can be built in Clutter to replace the now old Turf layers

Fair enough, but what happens if you have a route with turf layers in the 'new' version of the game? Do they not show?
