Google Maps & Surveyor

The only way to get anything from Google Maps into Surveyor is via the DEM software, which does have limited abilities since it textures it onto the map. :) Also, I think you can make scenery objects that are large planes of images from Google Maps. I usually just measure with the Google Earth tool and use the in-game rulers if I'm using it for track planning.

Cheers,

There are a few ways to do this in TransDEM.

- You can create UTM tiles which will be position-able, tile-able objects that contain the Google Earth Image.

- You can use the new 3D tiles which can position Google Earth images on a 3d-object or mesh that is positioned right into place and ready for putting in grass, track, etc.

- You can simply use the place map tiles which will gather up the Bing or Google Earth satellite images directly off their servers and draw them right on the mesh.

The problem with the latter method is the images are limited to specific colors and there is the issue of texture placement in Trainz. The images look awesome in TransDEM, but end up blurred in Trainz due to the texture placement limitations.

Which one to do you use?

Pick your poison as they say. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages. I've only used the direct image placement and never attempted anything with the others so I have no experience with them other than what I've read.

I couldn't get Google Earth to work for me in TransDEM. The creator of TransDEM said that there is a bug in the program. So check it out before you purchase.

I read that. Roland said he'll work on that once he returns from his vacation. The bug was introduced in v2.6, however, it should work going forward as it worked in the past.

Thanks to all who replied. I'm still in the thinking stage as to whether I want to build this route or not.
