good better best trees and other flora

As new and better trees are created, is there a quick and easy way to distinguish the new 3D versions from the older 2D billboards? Aside from creating a huge picklist.

Not that I know of. The names given to the tree assets by their creators is often no guide at all and sometimes do not even tell you that it is a tree, 3D or not.

In my experience individually looking at each new offering and making your own decision seems to be the best method. But even if there was a quick and easy way then you would still need to do inspections and build a picklist to narrow down the selection to those that suited your requirements for the region or regions you are modelling.

For example, I have built separate picklists for vegetation that matches particular ground textures - desert sandy, red earth "outback", dry, etc

argh, where is the "database" when you need it? We really need a way to classify all the items in our content. Too many gems are getting lost in among all the fluff. grrrr:n:

I really wish content creators would make content with universal names. Like "SpeedTree" somewhere in the name, etc. It would make finding content WAY easier. Jointed Rail has "JR" in most of their contents names which is fantastic. It makes it 1000x easier to find stuff then. The problem is there is so much junk on the DLS now and N3V has no intention of cleaning it out. I wish they would though because I mean half or over half of the so called "400,000" assets are junk from UTC, TRS2004, TRS2006 and TS2009. However, there is good content from the old versions that CAN be kept because it still looks good enough. A perfect example is the Wadalbavale Line (Australian) which I just got again recently and trains that go with the route. They still look pretty great for their age! But, they need to remove anything that is too subpar in my opinion. Also, products need to be updated. The Lumber load for example sucks along with the generic container loads "20ft container" and so on. They look so horrible. They are like 4-bit graphics!

Quite like the effect of speedtrees but have found overuse may well impair performance when driving the route. I too have picklists which are similar to pguy in-so-much calling it UK country and Aus country. In these picklists are favourites, but oh how it grows. Still believe in the KISS system, and keep routes to simplistic/workable but aesthetically appealing.

Unfortunately it is an often quoted misbelief that speed trees are a significant drag on performance. There have been several threads on this issue and all such claims have been debunked

Went out and planted one of each from the Speed Tree library in a new baseboard. A lot of quality in there but also a few duds. Biggest issue I have, something that has plagued Trainzers for a long time is the lack of a naming convention. Not just the foreign language names although localization was supposed to fix that but using random letters and numbers, really? Is it that difficult to give meaningful names? They might mean something to the creator of the tree but leave me wondering what it is. Having now seen them, I see I was missing quite a few when looking for a certain look of tree.

How did some rocks slip in as trees. And what look like a couple of the old fashioned billboard trees too. A funny one was a tree with an animated trunk but a static branch.

Now to prune the picklist and create a few sub lists for different categories, tropical, desert, temperate, etc.

You can actually make rocks with the Speedtree modeller, however they need the SpeedTree Library to work, seems a bit daft to me when you can make rocks in Blender, 3dsMax or even Gmax.

Currently my favorites are by roystrainz and you can search for 'roystrainz' in the name. They are payware however (included with his routes). Seasonal

Second would be rmm's which are searchable by 'rmm' but his early (low number) efforts may have some problems for some. Sadly his stuff doesn't seem to look too good in TRS19 but I suspect that is due to TRS19 problems rather than the trees themselves. Not seasonal

mcguirel's very good too but most of her freeware is not seasonal and her payware is not available anymore. (her trees are spectacular in Autumn)

I used roystrainz' trees to completely forest the Proto-Clinchfield route, about 60 square miles heavily forested and performance is fairly good 10-40 fps.

I used mcguirel's to replace all the trees on the Norfolk & Western - Appalachian Coal route and the C&O Hinton Division route and performance was OK too. 10-30 fps.

cayden used rmm's trees on his massive MBC routes and performance is outstanding. That is around 150 miles of heavily forested terrain.

I've replaced billboard trees on many routes and not noticed any degradation of performance and, in a few, a noticeable improvement.

I do tend to limit the selection of trees to a few types, I'm not sure that is necessary but seems to improve performance. No real tests of this premise though.

Many of rmm's have been updated, never had any problems with the ones I use here and they seem fine in TRS19 Beta, as are the mcguirel ones on the DLS and her no longer available payware ones.
