Hi! Just curious if there are any routes out there that include the West Highland Line and more particularly the Glenfinnan Viaduct? Seems like it would be fun to take for a spin.

Hi Forester
Have a look for author nawlins it will be a trs2009 or similar but it works in TANE and it shows a good representation of the Glenfinan viaduct of Harry Potter fame.

Regards

Ken

Fort William to Maliag TANE version is now available

LOL! Looks like optional spellings. Got it downloaded, hopefully will try a run tonight. Any recommended locos and rolling stock is appreciated.

The upper name is Gaelic, the lower the anglicised version.
there’s the same system in Wales, with the Welsh name above the anglicised one.

Good luck with the Gaelic pronunciation!

Actually, it's the transposed "a" and "i" that I was jesting about :hehe:

The Gaelic pronunciation is quite easy, just put the accent on the 1st syllable, and make the 2nd syllable a combination of "ag" and "ig".. sort of like Mall -ig

Mallaig (/ˈmælɪɡ/ (listen);[2] Scottish Gaelic: Malaig [ˈmal̪ˠɛkʲ] derived from Old Norse Mel Vik, meaning sand dune bay) ...

Well, there's some Gaelic on the McKenzie side of my family, so I am always interested in things Scotland. Nice to read these posts and learn!

Missed the request at first. I prefer steam so I like to use BR MK1 maroon carriages by Mike10 with either the Black 5 or Royal Scot class
you could download the blue_pullman set of locos and carriages by kemplen.
I don’t seem to use UK goods rolling stock on UK routes so I’m not much use in this respect.

Ken

I have a lot of assets by edh6 downloaded, so I think I should be able to put something together. Thanks guys!
EDIT: First "flyover", it looks like a very well crafted, beautiful route. Now on my recently created bucket list to ride this when I visit Scotland. I see a two-car consist in blue and white on the route at Fort William, so I might just find a totally non-prototype blue UK loco of some kind to pull it with. Call it artistic license. I should look for something Scot though.

The Mallaig line does have a number of excursions using it - some steam powered - like the Hogwarts Express and some rail tour holidays.
However, the normal passenger service for these branch lines is a 2 to 3 car diesel set.
try looking up “Scotrail” on the DLS.

If you’re coming for a period, you might like to look for a railway holiday - a package of rail trips and hotel accommmodation for selected lines.
One of our friends went on one of the 5 day tours and rated it highly - it also save you driving!

From our personal experience, post Covid a number of the smaller hotels, bed&breakfasts, pubs are struggling with staffing levels and have reduced services. It’s wise to check before just dropping in.
Usual precautions needed - bring midge repellent! School holidays in the UK are in full swing, it’s quieter in September (Scottish schools reopen at the end of August, English ones early September).

Thanks for the tips ColPrice2002! Next year at the earliest. We were just in London and Stratford Upon Avon this last May (watched the coronation from our Hotel room), That seems like a great time of year as we had wonderful weather. Our Hotel sat right at the south end of Westminster bridge, so all the military bands that came to the coronation via Waterloo station marched both ways past the hotel and across the bridge, drums, brass and bagpipes going the whole way. It was great to see!

There's the "Jacobite" special that uses the route - either a Black 5 or a K1 locomotive plus BR (1960) era Mk1 carriages - Composite, FO and TSO. Their website has a number of details

All the best,

Colin

Thanks Colin. Yes, that is mostly what I have been seeing online. It looks like it would be fun. I have read a lot about the 1600s since I have been back. King James, Shakespeare, the gunpowder plot, the plague, etc. fascinating history.
