anyone out there know the ins and outs of GIMP that may be able to give me some pointers for reskinning locos and cars?

All you have to do is open a .tga file for editing, edit it then save. Gimp itself is a complex product but you only need a few bits of it.

Try it if you get stuck ask is probably the sanest approach.

Cheerio John

thanks for the tip and the link to the tutorial. i've been playing around and think i have the basics of my project mostly figured out. if it works the way i hope i'll try to upload the results to the DLS. i want to thank everyone here for being so helpful

One thing to note with Gimp and tga files. Depending on your default settings, you need to remove the selection for RLE compression when saving, since you need your tga's uncompressed.

Go to the Trainz Resources Directory and enter "reskin" in the search box on the left.

Also use this link for a trutorial by Josh E Harvey.

None are for Gimp but you will find the procedures to be similar.

Also look under Tutorials/Gimp for a bumpmapping tutorial.

Thanks for the links, but the Trainz Resources Directory has a page that says it will be back online on January 1st, 2009. And I can't get past the first page on Josh Harvey's tutorial.

Milaga, thanks for letting me know about the errors. I did update the tutorial with a new program a few days ago and introduced some errors. It's all fixed now, so please go back because it is a really good tutorial.

I couldn't find the other error. That was a splash page I had before the site was opened. I have no idea where you saw it because it shouldn't even be on the site. I checked all the links on the pages I sent you to and they all work fine except for any pages hosted by Geocities. They closed down a week ago and lots of Trainz pages were hosted there. If you know what link lead you to the page, please let me know.

With just on 1,000 pages, I'm afraid gremlins are unavoidable. I haven't been able to find a link checking program that actually works, so I have to do everything by hand or wait for kind-hearted people like you to report dead links.

Thanks

Hi Peter, Thanks for that. I don't have the faintest idea what happened there. I haven't been near that part of my cPanel for years. On checking, everything was fine, but I deleted and re-entered the information and now it's okay. With over 100 visitors a day, I think some people will be a bit peeved off. I've been checking the site daily, but for some reason I've been using the second link you gave me.

Anyway, it's fixed now and I'll put a redirect link in that index page which I'd forgotten I've been using to protect the parent directory.

Thanks,

John
