Hi everyone,
If you're into creating prototypical Australian layouts, you can download free 1:250,000 scale topographic maps from the Geoscience website.
The scale is pretty large and the contours aren't visible around built up areas, but it's a good place to start.
1. Go to the 'Geoscience Australia' website www.ga.gov.au
2. Click on 'Products' (top right hand corner)
3. Click on 'Free Data Downloads' (Left hand menu bar)
4. Select the 'topography' check box
5. Click on the 'Show me results' button
The rest should be self explanatory. Note that you will need to register for a licence (free) before being able to download.
If you are having trouble finding the map name for the area you are looking for, then Google search for an index on a different website - the geoscience index is available only in ArcView shapefile or MIF formats.
Hope this helps someone!
