For all you still sticking with Windows XP...

Please don't advise people to remain with any variant of XP. The OS is antiquated at this point and unsafe to use in an internet enabled environment. Newer operating systems provide significantly more performance and security, with the push for a unification to 10 through a free upgrade being available.

Zeldaboy14 - it's a very bad idea to suggest the version that you have suggested. This is a special version with specific uses and is not for mainstream use on PCs.

The US military still like it, they have recently paid Microsoft around 9 million dollars to keep creating updates and keeping it secure so they can continue using it for the next few years. I think I heard some other country in Europe also has made a deal with Microsoft and is paying them millions to keep it going a bit longer.

I can only reinforce LNERlover5s comments above. It is history.

Agreed. The only people who still have a supported version of XP (apart from the POSReady version which is not a mainstream version and is not for general use) are ones who have purchased specific support plans from Microsoft.

I wouldn't put this on your computer, it isn't meant to be a full OS. If you insist on keeping XP, there is a relatively simple registry hack that you can use to make XP look like it's POS ready 2009 to the Windows Update servers and you can get the updates that way. I won't post it here, I'll just say you can find it with a Google Search and it is on a reputable tech site. I don't recommend it unless you know what you are doing.

I wouldn't recommend the registry hack full stop personally. The updates for the POSReady version are different to the normal Windows XP updates and are likely to cause problems.

There's been a message from Microsoft for the registry hack saying the updates are not suitable for normal XP anyway.

POSReady? I know that means Point Of Sales Ready, but it is an old operating system. I've been away from XP, now I consider it Piece Of S*** Ready, for what limited stuff it runs now.

And the reason they have done this is because of a large quantity of legacy programs which have to be upgraded, tested, and readied to work on a different OS. This will always be an issue with government entities, and large corporations which have legacy programs, which in some cases are still running on older hardware and are slowly being ported over to more modern systems.

I wonder how many programs are still running on legacy hardware such as DEC VAXs and IBM 3270s.
