Floridian High Speed Train Project is dead!!

ish6

Since 2001
Hey Floridians,

In case you have missed it, this week channel 9news said that the governor will give back the billions of dollar's and kill the high speed train from Orland to Tampa, and then later in the future to Miami!:'(

I think it's a mistake, with all of this traffic, etc -- I would have taken it to Orlando, at least ones, and not drive!

Ish

If it's anything like it is here it will be less millions of $ in consultancy fees, surveyors, development costs, public relations.
Nothing to do with track and rolling stock for it.

Ish, I think your grandchildren and great grandchildren will have more pressing items to spend their money on anyway!;)*

*Like...Oh, I don't know....FOOD?

You're probably right, Ed! LOL

Still, it would have been nice -- these Florida highways are just too crowded, etc ... and forget about the speed limit which is 70 ... they are folks going 90+ ...

Yes, I agree Ish, it would have been nice. The way I see it, there's too many of those sentiments floating around now days. I look at how things are generally going, and I don't see how it's all supposed to work in the future. Basically all these dreams of windmills and solar powered this and that and unicorns and rainbows are great to think about, and to aspire to, but until the funding is SAVED UP (not borrowed) I don't find it feasible.:(

Sadly America's loss. It has continued to fall away behind much of the rest of the modern world in passenger railways.

That is because "the rest of the modern world" is going the wrong way.
Great news about Florida. Now for California.

The system is all screw up for sure -- I feel that the US needs a transportation revolution, just like Dwight Eisenhower did for the highway system in the 50s; Highway and rail and upgrades, etc ...

With that said, my dear friend, we won't see this transportation revolution, that honor is reserve for our distance future children!

What they need to do is to not resurface the freeways, to instead leave the vintage 20 plus year old concrete slab pavement intact and as the only pavement. Then people will be steaming about having to drive on the freeways!

Oh, and building toll stations on the freeways would also make them less attractive, while at the same time raising money for the railway project! :D ;)

For progress to be made, the reign of the almighty Interstate 95 must fall, with power being returned to good old U. S. Route 1 and the railways. :D :p ;)

Regards.

I wish they would take that money and invest in the regional short lines. A lot of abandoned rail running everywhere sitting unused. The cost of one mile of high speed rail could go a long way in refurbishing all those old lines. The Chesapeake and Indiana where I live is trying to do just that and has restored some rail service to my area. Google the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum to get an idea of what they would like to do.
Most here will not accept that much money thrown at something that does not benefit them. Bringing rail to more people may change their minds when they can actually see the benefit up close. Until then, it is just a pipe dream.
Need to go towards rail more for people and freight. Just need to spend the money wisely now and show how it can help. Most see high speed as a boondoggle they will never get to use. Need to bring rail to their door step and then go from there.
And rjhowie2, you need to look at our size and the logistics of bringing rail to our population along with the costs involved. Not an easy task as we are so spread out.

Dave.....

Florida HSR will come back up seven more times before (if) it dies, but from what I understand Sun Rail/HSR still has plenty of fight in it.

Not if you live in Lakeland...

 ...it's down, but not for the count...

Too many Floridians from Tampa to Orlando have already got the picture perfectly...

If commuter rail stops through Doylestown, PA, it can happen in Florida.

I ran I-4 on concrete that had not been resurfaced in 25-years...now it's a six-lane interstate all the way & crowded as heck.

Florida High Speed Rail is not about impossible, but for now, so many national projects have been proposed & now challenged that they realize it may take time to get stable funding without sattleing the state taxpayers with huge long-term dept...notice how there is not much more corporate funding other that CSX fronting a mainline...

It's going to happen, whether it starts as low speed light-rail or high-speed is the question.

You simply have no clue as to the amount of travel being done even as we post, in the State of Florida.

Who knows? But wherever the rest of the world is 'going' they're going considerably faster than people in the USA! :p

Paul (thinking about all those yanks stuck in traffic jams)
