Florida East Coast's plans for private passenger rail...

So evidently, the FEC plans on operating inter-city passenger service around Orlando, starting in 2014. Portions of this line will meet the U.S. standards for "high speed rail", operating between 79mph and 125mph at various points. However, what makes this different from most high-speed rail plans is that this will be an entirely private operation, with all start-up costs paid by the FEC and not the U.S. federal or Florida state governments. If all goes to plan, this will be the first privately-operated inter-city service since American passenger rail was essentially nationalized under the Amtrak banner 41 years ago.

An historic event for U.S. railroading regardless of the outcome.

Thank you for this thread. Good to see private parties getting into the HSR craze. I hope this succeeds as it may be the key to a whole new transportation infrastructure that makes sense.
