Finance in the game?

Hi,

I'm interested of bying the Trainz simulator 12, but first I wish to know more about the game.

How is the finance managed in this game? I mean, is there some budget in the game, does it cost to build a railway track for example? How can you make profit in the game?

Does the game have any scenarios, pre programed missions, targets to reach?

Thank you for reply in advance

Finance is not a part of the game. You can not loose or gain virtual money.

If you are a pro at making content for the game, you might be able to make a few real coins outside the game, but dont quit your day job.

It has a bunch of routes pre-installed with every route having a few sessions.
There is an achievement system in place. Achievements are scored based on sessions finished and number of actions done; shunting / switching, passenger service and industry service.

The big gain of the game is that there is a lot of communitie made content available to download and play outside the pre-installed stuff.

There is no model of finance in Trainz. It`s free and open world meaning you can lay track and place buildings. Without purchasing like in Railroad Tycoon or SimCity. Like oknotsen mentioned only kinda finance part is creating or buying payware products such as locomotives and routes for your Trainz. :)

Okay, thanks for the reply.

So the game is after all just building a track and driving trains? There is a possibility to give orders to virtual driver but i guess the game gets quite boring in this way?

Aah, I loved the old sid meyer's transport tycoon. A lot of good memories with that game. Is there any moder version of the TT available, do you know? I have tried the Sid meyer's Railroads but its not very challenging game.

The game is a train simulator. That includes driving the train as close to the real thing as the creators current consider possible. An other part of that is creating routes, either fantasy or recreating real life routes.
Add to that the multi-player part; you can drive your train(s) together with others on the same route.

You might be beter off asking that on a general gamers forum.

The difference between trainz and a game like TT is that Trainz is a train simulator first and TT is a game first. TT has trains in it, Trainz has industries in it.

It hasn't gotten boring in the 10 years I've played it, but I'm interested in trains...;)

hehe, don't get me wrong. I meant that if you use the virtual driver, then it gets a bit boring.

I'm also interested of trains generally, but I don't know if the trainz can be interesting for years only by driving trains.

btw, how long does it take to complete missions in trainz (average)? Can you save your progress during a mission?

No worries. I would agree with you once all the sessions and scenarios are finished, once all the switching puzzles have been completed and once all the landscape has been seen, it could get boring. Once you finish all that.

Seriously, I think the sandbox world editor is the most interesting bit of Trainz, but there's other parts of the game that are a draw as well. Something for everyone.

Except those that want to play a financial game.:(

You can save your sessions.

Some are as short as 25 minutes, others take close to 3 hours.
Cant really give you an average, but I doubt it is below 1 hour.

If you love TT, have you seen/tried OpenTT? Its an updated version with lots of extra content, mods. Has a massive community and it is quite awesome!

AHH! But when you've mastered giving commands to ONE virtual driver, then you add a SECOND vitual driver going the other way. Then a THIRD virtual driver going the same direction as the first, but faster, so you have to plan to have both trains meet the one coming in the opposite direction, and plan a place to have the faster train overtake the slower. All without causing a collision, or violating speed limits, or.....

Hmm, you're from Finland so let me give this example. You can consider trainz as a model railroad in your computer. Instead of being restricted to just a room in your house or just a table in a room you can have a railroad as big as Helsinky if you like. Including all the things you would do with a model railroad such as layout planning, tracklaying, building up scenery, revising parts you don't like and finally of course running trains. I presume people will come up with more specific things to do even, but this is in a nutshell the big picture.
Let me assure you, the possebilities are endless.

There is no single "right way" to use Trainz

I fondly remember Transport Tycoon, which was my favorite (and before that - "A-Train") and also several other "tycoon" type games. But I never really got into the business end of it (accounting is what I did for a living - I sure didn't want to do accounting in my leisure time). World building was what I was into and the endless possibilities of doing this in Trainz is the appeal for me. Some users spend most of their time in Driver - I spend most of my time in Surveyor.

Since driveable buses, trucks, boats, and airplanes are trains in disguise (using invisible track), you could conceivably have a fully functional route in Trainz without even having a single "train."

I have created sessions that last for 7 days. And yes, you can save a session as many times as you need to complete it. There is such a variety of routes and sessions it would be helpful to know what you like. Long haul heavy freight? Fast passenger? Way freight servicing industries along the way? Switching an industrial park with 50+ industries? Classifying freight cars and making up trains in a yard? How about running a hump yard? Or maybe a logging narrow gage road? All these and more are available on the Download Station at no additional cost. Or, you can create your own.

Thank you all for the reply.

I will continue to think if this game is for me. Perhaps the train driving could be interesting enough to byu this game. The lack of finance is not an issue anyway.

And then again, there is this Railworks. At the moment I don't know anything about it but I must check it also, which is an issue for other forums.

I wish you all good times with trainz.

Just a note: RailWorks has no scoring or money. AI is difficult to set up and route creation is also a bit harder. The actual driving experience is slightly more realistic.

Check out YT vids, reviews on other sites, and the arguments on the Forums here.

P.S. The above RW opinions are just that: OPINIONS.

And if you want a good Tycoon game, Locomotion is awesome!

Much prefer TTD (OpenTTD) myself, even better... ;)
Hmm, just had a look at their site since I've never heard of this.
Wow that's a blast from the past. I immediately got memories of A-Train from Maxis. One of the very first games I got for my pc in the eighties of the previous century. In those days viewed on an amber coloured black and white monitor. :hehe:
