They are required by scripted signals and are used by bloodnoks and chrisaw created signals. The script looks ahead for the feather so it knows which signal aspect to show. Without them the signal will not show which track has been signaled, this is more apparent with semaphore signals.
When you say feathers on a pole are you referring to the old Signal BR by Auran? If this is the case look at all the Sig 3A BR signals, these add arms automatically when it sees the T feather.
