Explosive Device Found On Amtrak Rails In New Haven, CT

WTNH TV-8 on Apr 15 2008

There are tense times in one area of New Haven where a potentially explosive discovery caused a commotion on the train tracks Tuesday evening.

It was a couple of kids who made the discovery after seeing something 'unusual' on the tracks. "It was a green, greenish brown," Joey Cruz Barrios, of New Haven, said of the object. "It got an orange piece on the bottom and the string was popping down."

The object the kids stumbled upon was nothing to play around with. "When the AMTRAK officers investigated, they found that there was what appeared to be a grenade lodged in the fence underneath the overpass," New Haven Chief Administrative Officer Rob Smuts said.

One of the boys parents could hardly believe it. "I really thought it was fake," Niszida Cruz Barrios, of New Haven, said. "When he came to the house, I thought he was joking around and then I was like, you know what I'm getting myself up. I'm gonna go check and then I see the officers...I was like 'whoa.'

Within minutes, AMTRAK Police and Firefighters had the scene 'secured' and a bomb technician from Yale was called in.

"The pin was attached, it was taped in a secure fashion when it was put in the metal box," The Yale Bomb tech said.

A search of the area didn't turn up any other devices but the situation raises obvious safety concerns. Metro North, Acela and Shoreline East all use these tracks.

All train service is back up and running as scheduled. That device is set to be detonated.

 I thought that no one (READ: noone outside the Community) knew Amtrak even existed.

Seriously, though, why do people do things like this?
