Enhanced Interlocking Towers - more towers or more paths per tower?

I am currently in the process of re-signalling my route for the 10th time. I am wondering what works best for you and why? I currently have a few towers-usually one for a "district" or "sub-division". It can get a little convoluted with many paths on one tower, and I am thinking of using one EIT per interlocking/control point.

I always think of the towers as signal boxes and place them where a signalman would control sections of the track. On a large through station, I would have one at each end controlling paths into and out of the platforms and a third for freight yards.

Exactly the same way I use though I sometimes have troubles with complicated goods yards
