dual channel population rules

if for example I have 2x2 gig and 2x1 gig am I right in thinking that the 2 gigs go in slots 1 and 3 and the 1 gigs 2 and 4 to keep it balanced.

Check with the motherboard manufacturer's specs to see precisely which slots are paired up. But yes the 2 gigs go in one pair of slots and the 1 gigs would go in the other.

Yep, nothing beats checking in the manual. If necessary you can probably download a copy from the manufacturer's web site.

"in dual channel mode, make sure you install memory modules of the same type+density in different channel dimm slots". Quote from manual.
single channel is slots 1+2.
dual channel 1+3 for 2 dimms or 1+2+3+4 for 4 dimms. slot 1 must allways be used or system may not boot.
the more I read I think i've got it right.
