What's wrong with the DLS?

I'll admit it isn't the most reliable site ever, but it usually works fine. the advantage is everyone can download content regardless of language, and uploaded routes will cause CMP/DLH to add all of the dependencies. The speed is the only thing going against it, and that is for a good reason, not to just p* everyone off (and it's quicker to download large files than load the Auran Trainz homepage :D)

EDIT: in fact you yourself have demonstrated this fact by asking where the Thomas soundfile is!

True It also makes it easier for us content creators to keep our stuff for non-warez users. one has to have a legit version of trainz to download off the DLS. Having to sit and make sure all the different people trying to access your downloads are actual legit users can be very tiresome.

Try http://trainz.luvr.net
there is a large amount of files there for all types of TRS, and almost all don't connect to the DLS.

And that good reason is....?

I'll explain the best I can.
There is only a given amount of bandwidth available, which is used by us. By restricting the speed, Auran are also restricting the amount of bandwidth available for free that can be used at any one time, so lower the operating costs (which I would imagine would be phenominal compared to other websites). This is why people purchase FCTs, which mean they can contribute to the operating costs that they are incurring by using a privilaged higher speed connection.

It also regulates the speed across all of the users, so some people don't get faster access than others.

If that isn't completely accurate, someone feel free to add to it, but that should give the basic gist. I for one am happy for this scheme to continue.

I also agree with PerRock's valuable point. I wouldn't like it if my tram were used illigitimately (especially since the meshes aren't mine in the first place).

It means if you download something from the DLS it has been through some sort of quality check. Also you don't have to go to thirty sites to pick up dependancies, three of which have disappeared and two no longer have the item up because the bandwidth cost was too high. One site in the UK used to be free downloads until the bandwidth was used up each day. I think the free bit lasted around 20 minutes starting at midnight. After that it was $10 per three months.

Also it cuts down the number of languages you have to know to find things and the number of people who get your email address when you sign up.

One web master I know used to sell his email addresses to spammers, well it brought in cash for the site.

As a content creator I prefer not to get emails asking me where some one can get a copy of ... use the DLS. I have some content hosted at another location but realistically if you want to find the latest version of my items just go to the DLS.

80,000 asssets is not enough for some people...:)
Particularly if its the wrong 80,000 for the layout you're doing.

Personally, since I submit to the DLS, I prefer to use only items that are on the DLS, unless there's an overwhelming reason why an outside asset is needed.
It makes it easier to find all the parts.:D
