Now, at least we can all relish with others on common ground. I have a great friend. Same school, same town, same age... Plus, he loves trains. Has money too. He has many HO locomotives, a DCC system, a large base for a layout. He my friend Ryan. You may not know him has Qbuff because he never comes on the forums. However, he's my beta tester for every thing I can make. No, it's not professional or anything, we talk everyday about stuff, and he'll ask me if anything is new.

So, besides him, I felt alone with trains as a kid...then we got internet! Boy, so many train people! Like a flock of nerds... Probably the best ones! :hehe:

Don't worry, I'm not calling anyone names. Just the ones who think themselves as nerds for fun. Like me.

I'm planning on making a layout soon. I have a Hornby DCC set, locos, rolling stock and carriages, buildings, trees, track. Now I just nead a board.

You should never go with the flow, unless the flow happens to be going your way anyway!
Otherwise you'll just end up vacuous and bland, which will culminate in you getting the word "Individual" tattooed on your arm "because all your mates did".

Seriously though, there's a fine line between liking trains and taking it too far.
Personally I like the operations side of things more than anything, although I've always been fascinated by the engineering aspect of it all.

Some people take it too far though, and I have to confess that I consider those people who are anal about details on models and routes, those people who never grew out of trainspotting at the age of 10, those who take it all far too seriously, those who consider themselves to be an expert on the subject, etc, to be dorks, dweebs, spanners, Mr Beans, etc.

But if that's what you want to be then good for you.
I'm sure that there are worse things in the world to be (just try not to be so anal about it all).

I dealt with it in Elementary school, when I ran to the window everytime a train went by my classroom window, so I managed to hide it in Middle school from the Kids (Worst decision I ever made) But then let it come out full blast in High school Currently. I am not one of those who are completely obsessed with them, I just like to photograph The Steamers left in America, and enjoy the modeling side of it. I just smirk at those who think because they pick on my hobby, that makes their hobbies better. it is sad because they will never know what joys there are in Building things that other people will admire, even if they don't, at least you have the model to give yourself the satisfaction of knowing you did it. As For the BSA thing, I am so glad there are more of the Scouts in the world, Sadly I turned 18 before I got eagle, I only made it to Star, But Happy 100th aniversary for the BSA, and enjoy the national one, I might go as an adult leader, just to meet others. Yes I did get the Railroading merit badge, I dislike the new badge compared to the old one.

On the original topic, trains are better than these other things kids today tend to prefer. A train is faster (usually), more powerful and larger and stronger than a car. Even more than one of the hotted up piles of junk (no offense anyone) that alot of teenagers drive and love. Trains are stonger and more efficient than trucks (and they can carry a heck of alot more in one trip than a truck could in 10). They also cause less damage to the environment than trucks and don't claim as many lives. (Why the heck am I going on about trucks!? ). Anyway, point made. :wave:

I think people think trains are 'dorky' or 'a kids interest' is because. There are no cool programs on TV to promote them. Look, we have Thomas The Tank Engine and Chuggington. Cars have Top Gear, Colin McRae Dirt 2 (which is awesome), the Need For Speed series, and their own sport.
Trains don't have their own sport, or TV show. They have plenty of games though, but its not like that counts, people arent going to buy them.
Now, if there was a funny, cool program on TV about Trains, then it'd be not considered 'dorky'.
Thats something for the Trainz community !
What would that sport be? Locomotive wars or locomotive pushing or lifting championships:hehe: ?
Locomotive wars would be cool,
It'd have the same commentators as NRL, that bald, short bloke and that tall guy with curly hair.
'This week in locomotive wars! It's Australia's NR class verses the American SD90MAC!
'Who can pull the most frieght, who can stop the quickest, and who can change their oil fastest?'
That's all next week, on locomotive wars!'

Because they are typical kids who would rather talk about their latest girlfriend or boyfriend, or text on their phones and waste time rather than preparing for a lifelong career on the railroad!
Believe me, most of them are jealous of your knowledge and are trying to act un-interested so that they look cool in front of their friends.
Trust me, I'm going out the door now to go deal with it again.

life is full of choices, most of my friends think the trainz sim and our Model RR are really cool. in high school only a few people knew about my hobby but in HS i was so super busy that at the time was always playing sports or riding BMX.
All my Drag Racing friends think trainz are kool too. we under stand horse power thats why.

I like the fact with trainz i can make any thing i want my way and theres not many limitations on possibilities.

I'm not only a fan of Trainz,(TC3 and before ONLY thank you Auran!) but from an area about 300 miles from the county in which my school is in. This, as well as the fact that "I'm a bof" makes me a prime target. Luckily for me, my school is very good at dealing with bullies. Just last week the foot started to fall on another 6. :hehe:
I now find that any jokes made aren't about me, or trains at all! The few, rare ones about trains just cause me to burst out laughing!

I don't think anyone "plans" to make a career out of flipping burgers....if they plan to work fast food for life, they would probably have a bigger picture in mind. A local man in this area started out working for McDonalds in school...the company helped him move up the ladder until he was able finance his own McDonalds franchise and now he has three.....it seems to have made sense to him....
