It's one of the best UK layouts ever made and gives a fantastic introduction to UK railway practice in the last years of steam (ie. early to mid 60s). And it comes with lots of lovely rolling stock and stuff (still being added to). I can't recommend it highly enough!
You could model the Settle & Carlisle. Part of the route for the Flying Scottsman. Very scenic. Freight yards, tons of sations and a giant terminal plus a large viaduct and many smaller ones. Don't forget the tunnels.
Use Google Earth both the 3D mode and then the map mode where you can travel the actual streets and areas. You can then capture screen shots with any screen capture type program and use those textures on making your own buildings. There's nothing like making the actual buildings which surround your track.
