Does Anyone Still Have Postwar Lionel?

hoborailcat

Backdating is fun.
I guess this is the best place for this thread. Just wondering, is there anyone out there who has any of the old Postwar or even Prewar Lionel O scale trains? There seemed to be some interest in the Postwar engines I released from modified Subpar Productions engines back in February. I got into it just at the beginning of this year with the purchase of a 1953 model 2055 Hudson. It had been sitting for 20 years, but started right up like new.

I happen to have a 223 Warbonnet ALCO FA and a 6112 gondola. The FA I got as an early Christmas present from a train show. The FA is somewhat hard to find but the gondola is very common.

But Said FA came with a B-unit instead of its A counterpart.

The gondola predates the big storm in 2005 that we had. I think you know what it is. It, a tender (The loco was toast.) and a DT&I hopper were saved. The Gondola was one truck less and so was the hopper. I got them repaired in the beginning of the second coming. I have them with me now.

I've got my Grandpa's (and his brother's) old Lionel stuff. Don't know their numbers offhand, but i've got a Pennsy 2-6-4, a NYC 2-6-4 that somebody took the lead and trailing wheels off of to make an 0-6-0 (both have matching tenders, they look eeriely like J1e 4-6-4s) a Chessie NW-2, a log bunk that tips, a gondola, a NH boxcar, a PRR N5c caboose and an AT&SF caboose that's similar to the car they sell in starter sets nowadays. I've also got a set of 4 coaches (Horribly under scale to the engines, there's 2 coaches, a solarium obs, and a RPO) a 3 dome tank car, and my personal favorite, the Lionel Operating Milk car. I've never gotten it working (I want to though) but it's fully loaded with all its milk cans, and i've got the operating track section and the platform for it (I've got enough track to make a decent sized layout, along with 4 electric and 2 manual switches, though all of it is badly corroded). Also there's an operating bucyrus erie 250 ton crane, with spools than can turn the derrick, raise and lower the boom, and raise and lower the cable. the cable (really just some old string) broke long ago, but i've got it tied off so it won't foul the axles when i couple it to my modern Fishbelly gondola ("Couple" is a technical term, as the knuckles froze solid longa ago, all it can do is lift them up and lower then over the buckeye).

Plus, as the icing on the cake, a vintage Lionel ZW transformer. It works, my grandpa helped me get it working. :D

@tycoonk4: Those Alcos are great runners, and some are fairly quiet compared to the F3s of the time.
@dricketts: Those sound kind of like some of Ben's bogies, which are usually downloaded when you download the engines from his site.
@sawyer811:The Pennsylvania K4s are becoming increasingly rare, that one could be worth a lot depending on it's number. If you're interested, this site provides anything any postwar owner may want to know about their trains. http://www.postwarlionel.com/

You made me dig out my old lionels hoborailcat :hehe: the "0-6-0" is a 1666, the boxcar is an Erie, not a D&H, the tank car is a 2-dome sunco, and the K-4 is a 2035. However, all the engines and cabooses have their reporting marks painted out and are renumbered. the tenders and cabeese (and the Milk car) have a diamond herald put on them with my grandpa's initials on them for the reporting marks. and the engines are all remumbered. the 1666 has all but the one painted out, the NW-2 is No. 2, and the 2035 is No. 3. don't know if that degrades the value or not. I'm sure it does, but as to how much, i've got no clue.

bear in mind, this stuff means more to me than the monetary value, and i'd never sell it, but now i'm curious...

@sawyer811: The 1666 is quite a valuable engine being that it is from the very early part of the Postwar era, and the 2035 is nice because it is the only Magnetraction equipped K4. I hear you when you say they are worth a lot to you, I feel the same about my 2055. And a little customization never hurts, as long as you enjoy them. Just don't show them to a hardcore collector.:hehe:

It may not be bad as it seems.

A few questions.

1.Where the mods done in the 50's?

2. Are they sloppy? Or crisp?

the 1666 has its leading and trailing trucks removed, and sometime between when it was modified (in the 50's, they both were) it lost its main and eccentric rods, though the cranks are still there. The painting isn't that crisp (you can tell its just Testors or something, it doesn't really match the black on the engine, this is on both the 1666 and the 2035) but it's not noticable unless you're directly holding the engine up close. I'd stand to guess the paint would come off with some paint stripper, but i'd worry it would remove the numbers underneath.

and Hobo, the hudson is nice. I've seen a few 773's at my local train show, but i never have enough cash for them. the 1666 has a shot motor, but when i set the 2035 on my little layout, she started right up, even puffing smoke! 40+ years in storage, and she still has some smoke pellet(s) left in her smokestack. It smells awful (:hehe:) but hey, i love it. makes me feel all nostalgic when it trundles around. :D

My 2055 growls at me when it runs, but that lets me know it is working properly, just needs a bit of cleaning. The 773 is the absolute best Postwar steam engine available, even better than the 746 Northern in my opinion. Getting a good 1950 773 is every collector's dream, but a good one could cost easily $1000 or more.

Ok, I plan on taking photos of everything I got.

@Hoborailcat-You have a 746? Awesome. But I have something that is cool as that...
@sawyer811-Oh great, there not worth much unless you fix the 1666 and remove the paint. Now if it was official looking, it would sell very well. I have seen some 1950's repaints of F units in SP and UP colors. They costed a lot and sold quickly.

@tycoonK4: I wish I had a 746:hehe:, I was saying that in my opinion the 773 is better than the 746, and many of the people in the model railroad club I'm in agree with me. And I look forward to seeing the pics, always nice to see the classics.:D

I know the major want of many collectors is the Girl's Train. I happen to have the engine but it is in very, very rough shape. I also have got a pair of 2333 Santa Fe F3s as well as some other locos and many cars.

Well, lets see them.

Ok. Here are some pics (with some more to eventually come)

Yes, it isn't 100% pink but, the pink is original. When they released this loco back in 57' or 58', no girl really wanted a pink train and the train didn't sell well. So what storeowners or people who bought them did was paint over the pink to make the loco look more realistic. Some of that paint has been removed, just not to well.

Sorry about the sideways pic but, the camera formatted it that way.
Don't let those black trucks fool you, these are 2333s. (Trucks were painted over in black).

And the rare 2257 Tuscan with smokestack (which has been broken off). As well as its box.
To answer the Topic's Title. Yes people still do have lots o' Lionel.

Some of that stuff is nice, especially the 2333s. I'm debating on rather I want to continue my N scale layout or get a Postwar 2037.

@ wilh-Very nice, please continue removing the black paint, you may have a nice looking loco there. And then you can get the black version.

@ hoborailcat-Go to O-sacle, but be ready to get a little more cash out.

@ Everyone else-Well due to certain circumstances, I will post the photos tomorrow.
