I have decided to start a project to produce a DLR train...from scratch.. ..in all it's...erm...glory!
Not sure whether to try Blender, 3dsmax or g-max at this stage..

If anyone living in the Docklands area (or anywhere) has some pics these will be greatly appreciated..

Svoyager has given some useful tips but if anyone else wants to pass on their knowledge all contributions will be greatly received..:)

3D Model Maker

Having read other threads it seems Blender is the main topic of conversation at the moment and with the limitations of 3DSmax and G-max it looks like Blender is the route to go..:)

But having no experience of 3D model making I'm not expecting to produce anything substantial for quite some time..:o

Hey there.

Yes i would agree Blender seems to be getting all the talk at the moment, and probably just as good idea as any. I think though that more people use gmax and 3ds max on these forums though, so for trainz related support they might be better, although gmax is no longer officially supported. I've been using 3ds max 9 and find it awsome.

Anyway, i thought i'd just mention some pointers for finding photos on the Docklands light railway (or anything for that matter).

-A simple google image search is a good starter
-Then try all those image hosting sites
- www.flickr.com
- and the others..

I'm pretty sure those will turn up literally thousands of good quality photos for you. Remember, trainspotters/rail photographers sometimes just name thier image with the train number, so search that if you want to search for a particular train.

Hope that helps a little.
Jonny.

Be aware that the interest in Blender is because GMAX has a number of undocumented features ie bugs that have to be worked round and it is not as capable of certain types of advanced texturing as 3DSmax is. 3DSMax is expensive, Blender does not have the tutorials for making low poly models for Trainz yet, what we are hoping for is to develop the advanced texturing side of things and to have a more reliable and easier to learn tool to create in than GMAX. A number of people have found Blender much easier to pick up than GMAX. Because Blender is open source the product / exporter can be modified to give us the sort of models and textures that 3DS max is needed to produce at the moment.

There are at least two ways to get from Blender into Trainz without using the native exporter by the way so any work you do in Blender won't be wasted.
