After many weeks and much wailing and searching I have solved the downloading problem and maybe some other Trainzers can benefit from this bit of information.
I changed my modem from Siemans Speedstream 4200 to a D Link DSL302G (which I have had in the shed since updating my Optus DSL about 2 years ago) both of these were supplied by Optus and the D Link was in service for about five years and subsequently "updated" by the Siemens.
It was a bit of a long shot but after trying all the other "fixes" I was getting very annoyed at not finding a solution and prepared to try anything - my surprise and joy when it worked was amazing - as my Wife will testify.
I will now purchase my fifth First Class Ticket - not been much point until today.
