hi i went to go see who was online on my buddy list and all my contacts had disappeared, why? has this happend to anyone else?

Yes - me too - I lost about half of them.

I'm too scared to get on Trainz now! I'll just stick to GTA while this is resolved...

Same has happened to me. It usually happens when the ITrainz server is offline, whether it's due to a crash, or maintenance.

Only thing that can really be done is to re-add the missing contacts.
