Derailment realism? No derailments on curves?

Davie_UCF

Here since 2001, Trainz!!
How much does it take for a train to derail on a curve in real life?
A longer train would derail much easier I believe...

In trainz however my speed limits are only set by seeing how jerky and crazy the journey is from the cab window of a DMU.

I haven't seen a train derail without crossing dodgy set points or going off the end of a siding in what seems like forever.

Do they ever derail if you are going too fast? Is there a way to make this more realistic?

Hi David,

There all good questions, derails actually happen by worn wheels
bad track or sleepers breaking, locomotives and rollingstock
are just too heavy to jump off the track that easy,
I saw some kids put $2 coins on the rail at a curve,
Sprinter DRC's still went over it like it was nothing,
55ton cars they where also at around 80kph,
when I use that feature on trainz, they only seem
to derail on agenst points when I'm shunting,
in real life the loco would force the points over.

Snow causes more than a few derailments. Especially when the snow gets packed at grade crossings and snowmobile trails.

In Trainz there is the option of selecting the degree of derailment realism. Anywhere from Realistic to virtually none. In my real life, as a signaller in Cambridgeshire I have known derailments far more spectacular than anything you would find in Trainz. A few years ago a freight train loaded with aggregate destinied for Chelmsford derailed going across a river bridge, Result: No more train, no more bridge. And many years ago I can recall a loaded wagon becoming derailed. 3 miles of ripped up track, not to mention cut signalling cable and destroyed barrier treadles, later the train stopped!

Interesting, especially about a train for chelsmford. How long ago was that?

Trains in Trainz should derail more on corners, I think.. I've tried realistic and they seem quite stuck to the curves, unless it requires way too much excessive speed and sharp corners.

With regards to the train that derailed on a river bridge it must have been about 3 years ago. The river bridge spanned the river Ouse on the single line from Ely to Soham ( Remember the infamous Soham double murder of two 10 year old girls). Soham is also remembered for the heroism of a March driver and fireman, which is my home town incidently, during World War II when they uncoupled a blazing ammo wagon from it,s train and attempted to move it clear of the town. Although it blew up their actions saved countless lives and the village of Soham from destruction. They were both awarded the George Cross for their bravery. I would like to see Trainz match that! lol. Anyway, back to the derailment, the line was closed for a year whilst they built a new double track bridge. Why build a double track bridge on a single line you ask? The route from Felixstowe Docks to the Midlands is being upgraded for an increase in container traffic most of which currently goes via London
