I'm running 09 but it did this on 06 as well. I'll be at the launcher and click content. then the launcher will go away and then a windows screen pops up and says content manager has stopped working. and then you just click cancel and it does this ever time.

To find the place to change over from thumbnail to text is located across the top of the asset window (the largest window on the right side). To be able to do it requires that you are very fast to change it (before the crash happens), or you can delete the assets.tdx file in your ts2009 folder to give you some extra time while the file is recreated.
(default of C:\Program Files\Auran\TS2009\assets.tdx)
This link will explain how to change from thumbnail to text mode in content manager as well.
Using Vista is a bit of a pain. What you probably need to do to fix your problem is:
Find the programs for Trainz in their installation folders using Windows Explorer and modifly the way they run using 'Run As Administrator'
One way to do this if you are unsure is to left-click Start/All Programs/Auran, ts2009 (or trs2006). Now you should see 'Launch TS2009'. Right-click this 'Launch TS2009' and at the bottom is 'Properties'. Once the Properties folder pops up click the 'Open File Location' button (left side 2/3 down) then left-click the 'Compatibility' tab of the properties window and Select 'Run As Adminstrator'. This must be done for each of the programs contained in the auran folders on Vista, either for trs2006, or ts2009.
