Content Manager is driving me nuts

I don't understand the program at all, who does?
I've been downloading some routes and I downloaded all the dependencies that are not in DLS, ok should work right? Wrong, the stuff I downloaded and installed through the Manager show up with question marks, dunno what to do with that, worst of all, I'm supposedly not missing something (for the first time with 4 routes) but I can't find it in the routes menu in game....? What am I doing wrong or is it just another faulty fault?

Thanks:)

PS. I have so many kuids missing for Clovis route which shouldn't be like that at all, I downloaded everythingI needed to.

Move your mouse (without clicking on any mouse buttons) around within the content manager, and you will find your answer.

So I downloaded the Big Montana route, I downloaded ALL the DLC and when it loads it crashes on me. Not ONE, one route has worked so far. I'm giving up, it seems I'm getting closer and closer but every time it just hits me in the face with a baseball bat.

Maybe you guys had the years and years of patience, I just wanted to download some big routed to drive in, make some of my own and nothing has worked so far. 50 dollars gone? No, I'll keep on trying, which is even worse.

The thing is that I can see it's beauty, but all the annoyances, and I've looked all over this forum and many others and I can't seem to find to get this thing rolling, its frustrating me to the limit.

Yakutsky,

I'm not sure what your problem is so let me ask a few questions if I may. What do you think the Content Manager program is supposed to do? You may be expecting it to do more than it is designed to do.

I might sound a bit over dramatic, that's because I am.:'( I was looking forward to this too much.

The thing I expect it to do is to tell me if I have all the necessary files to run a route or be able to use the content I'm after.

First problem I keep in encountering is the ?'s, I know what they mean, it's just that according to the website I'm downloading the routes from I should be absolutely fine. (I've downloaded over 2 gig of dependencies now and still not one route works, I've downloaded a few of the most popular). Probable I have to look all over the place to get those ? filled.

Well, I did that, so now my Montana route is fully postively marked. It still says it needs more dependencies even though it doesn't shpw me I do. Then I think, should be fine, cause I read about all the bugs in the system where it tells you it s wrong but it isnt. Well in my case its both, now the route crashes on start up.

IF I do start a route, I can drive the engine for about 30 seconds before it catapults back with the train at 20 mph....

That's about it, there's more but this is the main thing, I can't actually play the game (well the standard routes are fine, as soon as I do any DLC it's horribly wrong). And in one day my "1st" class ticket runs out.

If someone knows what's going on, please help me, but I'm getting close to throwing this thing in the bin, not gonna ruin my xmas over it.

Cheers, :D

OK, so when you get the questionmarks, are you right clicking and looking for the error? If none are listed, then chose List Dependancies. There you should find at least one asset that has a question mark. Click on the View in Main List. You may have to go two or more levels deep to find the defective asset.

I know having to fix stuff is a pain, but all this "stuff" is created by others like you and me that really enjoy this crazy simulator. We don't always get things right and a lot of the early stuff was just thrown together without much forthought. Even some of the AURAN creations are lacking in correct details such as missing catagory-class tags in the config.txt files. Anyway, the content on the DLS is free, so you are getting a lot more than you are paying for.

I have build 44088 and manager v3.3.

If I have the kuid's of the questionmarks, how do I find the asset that I need? Is there a search engine outside of DLS? Or do I just need to find it manually?

Also I got a whole list of faulty dependencies in most routes, do I just delete them and redownload them? I can tell that all these things are missing when I start up the route.

Thanks.:D

The question marks are assets that CM3 was unable to locate and download. Two possibilities: (A) The asset is from a third party site and not available to CM3. (B) The asset has been removed from the DLS by its original creator in lieu of updating to current standards.

The faulty assets were created for older version of TRAINZ. Most can be made to work in 2010. However, each faulty asset must be addressed separately. There are many tools and tutorials available for repairing these assets. Once you repair a few and get the "hang" of it, consider it part of the fun.

There is an ongoing effort to update broken/faulty assets for use in 09/10. However, not all original creators are participating in this effort and some are no longer active (see "B" above).

Hope this helps you understand your dilemma.

If the question mark is a missing asset, then you have to become detective and see if you can find it on other sites. You can start by posting a question here if anyone knows where to find the asset. The name and kuid of the asset as well as the name of the asset of which the item is a dependency. More than likely, someone else has had to go through what you are doing and is willing to bundle the assets into a CDP and email it to you. I have done that in the past and have had other do it for me. The key is to ask nicely and give as much information as possible, more than you think someone may need.

Also I got a whole list of faulty dependencies in most routes, do I just delete them and redownload them? I can tell that all these things are missing when I start up the route. . .

What are the faults? Some faults can be ignored. And, are you running these routes in compatability mode? It is the best way to run older routes on 2010. It tends to overlook minor errors.

You should not blame Auran for this frustration-you are downloading routes that have been provided free by other users of Trainz. Auran only provide a place to obtain these, they do not vet them (maybe that's unfortunate, and a big cause of frustration, but that's the way it is). The fault is with the creators of this free content for using items (and parts of items) that are not on the Auran servers. Often they can't remember how they got them on their computers in the first place (not that helpful)!

Bit difficult to complain that the content from the free providers is
unsatisfactory!

Sometimes you can find the missing items by putting the kuid number into Google. But try searching these forums, from the search button at the top, it's very likely that others have already met the same problem.

You will also find routes/scenarios from creators who will either guarantee all items are on the download station, or list where to get them.
Here's a quote from "Philskene" for instance:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"Some say the hunt for the missing dependencies is part of the fun of Trainzing. But that's certainly not something that I subscribe to.

There are a few (a dozen or less perhaps?) of us route constructors who use only dependencies that are built-in or on the Download Station. If you want, search the DLS using "philskene" as the author. Make sure the search includes TRS2004.

You will also find sessions by me. On a few occasions rolling stock from an external site is used, but when that is the case I always provide a link to the site in the description.

Tell us if this helps."

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I also suggest the "UMR" routes/scenario's.

Just keep asking, this is a worldwide community.

I've been around here for close to 7 years and you think YOUR frustrated?! :D

Now that Auran only supports 2009 and 10, many of the assets you need to run routes are scattered over who knows how many 3rd party websites. Many warned this was going to happen, but then you had to put up with drive by bomb throwers that unleashed personal insults and false information. Funny that we never heard of these people before the great controversy over being banned from the DLS by Auran if you don't buy the newest version or a first class ticket.

Thanks for the replies guys, getting a little closer again.:p

I've gotten one route to work, so that's a relief, but still most crash or don't work at all.

Thanks for all the support, this will keep me playing TS2010.:D

Soon I will post the Kuid's I need, I hope someone could help me out.

Cheers
