Content Manager and file associations

I use Vista and principally use TS2010 now. After downloading items from third party sites I have occasionally double clicked the CDP file which inadvertentaly installs the asset into TRS2006. I have changed the options in CMP to not automatically commit. I have changed the association to TC3 without committing as this will do less damage if committed in error.
Ideally I would like to associate the CDP file with TS2010 but this option is not available and try as I may I can not make this work. The Content Manager is in the default location ie program files\Auran\TS2010\bin\Content Manager.exe any assistance would be most welcome.

If you run TS2010's content manager as administrator, it should set up the association anyway.

If it does not:

1.Hold the Shift key down, then right-click the .cdp file. (It is important to hold Shift down for this step)
2.Click Open With...
3.Click Browse, then select the relevant file.
4.Hopefully, it should then appear as a new icon in the Open With box - if it does, make sure the tickbox on that screen is ticked, then click OK.

Hi Shane
Thanks for responding. My PC is a single user PC and I am set up as the administatrator.
Whatever I try, I can not get Content Manager (for TS2010) to appear in the top box so that I can select that icon. (I have TRS2006 & TC icons)
I've never come across this problem before, well certaintly not with earlier versions of Windows.

That's Vista for you.

I'm slightly suprised that didn't work, but there are other methods available.

I will need to do a bit of further research into it, but it's likely to either be a de-association followed by a re-association, or a registry edit.

I am not really bothered about the file opening CMP as I would rather do that manually. The only reason I have a file association is so that the CDP Icon clearly shows for the file. If there is another way I would prefer to use that.

Set up as administrator is not the same as Run as Administrator, newer versions of Windows have crippled Admin accounts, try right click Run as Administrator?

I tried that but it doesn't seem to make any difference.
Is there another way to stop CM's loading by mistake but also maintaining the file icon on CDP files.

Ken

Hi Ken,
I save all my CDP downloads to the desktop. Open CMP and drag and drop. That installs the content into TS2010 and leaves me with the CDP on the desktop.
Regards Frank :)

Hi Frank
Yes I keep a folder on the desk top called Temp Trainz which I use to download into from third party sites. I then open CM 3.3 and drag the files into CM. The problem comes when I inadvertantly double click on the file instead of dragging, this opens TRS2006 and installs the downloads. This could cause problems as most of my downloads are for 2.9 upwards as I use TS2010 most of the time. I still use TRS2006 and I could find that the later version assets caused crashes. This has happened to me twice before. I've set CMP (TRS2006) to NOT aurtomatically commit so I can delete the assets installed in error. I was after a better solution eg set TS2010 Content Manager as the default for CDP files but I cannot get this to work properly.

Follow Shane's initial suggestion. You need to have the "Always use the selected program to open this type of file" check box ticked in the "Open With" dialog. Click the Browse button in that dialog, select the ContentManager.exe file in your TS2010 installation, click the "Open" button, then click the "OK" button, I believe (making sure that aforementioned check box is ticked).

Using Shane's instructions at stage 4 I click on Content Manager in the TS2010/bin folder and it does not put the program into the top selection area.
I tried this on an XP PC where I have TS2009 and TRS2006 installed and I can not get Content Manager from TS2009 to appear in the top box.
