Content Creator Programs?

Hello Kris94,

Blender is a great place to start.

http://www.blender.org/

Also checking Content creation section in forums has a lot of good info as well. It helped me get started.

Another good site to learn Blender.

Also if you don't like Blender, there is Gmax as well. Though I dont know much on Gmax, as I much prefer Blender. But sure there is plenty of other content creators that can shed light on Gmax tutorials etc.

Gmax website : http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax

Hope that helps some

Cheers

Or Blender which is also free, they all have a steep learning curve though so you will have to do a lot of simple stuff before you can move on to locomotives and suchlike.

Sketchup is by far the easiest program to use, but the models can't be directly placed into Trainz from it. You have to convert them to Blender first and this is a lot of hassle.

Having tried them all, spend the $70 for 3d Canvas (or it's new name 3d Crafter). I found it was the simplest and most intuitive.

3d Canvas also has a utility which will produce locomotive driving gear.

Found Blender and Gmax impossible to get my head around.

3d Canvas was easy enough for this caveman to get material into all the train simulators.

Just my opinion

If you use one of the programs that uses the Auran XML importer you stand less chance of creating something that gives Trainz indigestion.

There have been some pretty good models done in 3d Crafter (nee 3d Canvas) so it must work.

Better some Trainz indigestion than mine being aggravated by the other Content Creator Programs but to each his own.

If you use the Auran/N3V XML importer then Auran ignores anything that does not map to the .im fires correctly. If you depend on the third party programmer who wrote the exporter for 3D Canvas then they may have a bug in their code which may cause problems when running Trainz. The use of XML is purely an isolation technique that reduces the need for testing with each new build of Trainz that comes out. Otherwise the proper way to do it is to have a test suite that checks each feature is correctly created in Trainz and doesn't create any code that is redundant, but that's quite expensive and difficult to do and I suspect isn't done by 3D Canvas.

There is a difference between somethings work on a good and being more confident that every feature works as intended. If you ever work on a large complex computer program you expect to see a list of bugs, using XML just helps keep the bugs down.
