Consists for BR Blue/Intercity Swallow Eras

alexl102

Learning... slowly!
Not so long ago, Rob/Lielestosbrat released a fantastic set of steam-era consists, including various named trains and train formations for certain well-known services, plus some goods consists.

I was just wondering whether any similar consists are available for the BR Blue Era, as I'd love some for running on the 'Duchy Days' layout?
I know that a lot of the named services were no longer in existence by then but basically I know very little about actual train formations. Anything that provided me with a few that were either generic or specific to a route (eg ECML/WCML) would be brilliant.

Likewise are there any such things for the Intercity/Swallow era?

Thanks very much,

A

Hi

It is easier to get train consists for steam days than later periods as I have four books which give consists for LMS/BR LMR and LNER/BR ER periods. I haven't seen anything similar for Western or Southern consists although I've never looked for them as these regions don't interest me.

For later periods you would need to look for Carriage Working Books on ebay or for sale from specialist dealers. I have one for the 1974 ECML consists which gives the make up of trains for May 74 to May 75. It isn't as straightforward as you would think because the same train could have different make ups for Weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays or at different times of the year. Trying to recreate these consists in Trainz can be difficult as it isn't always clear whether a BSO for example is a Mk1 or a Mk2 vehicle. Some trains are marked as air conditioned which I assume means that they are all Mk2 stock but not all of the required vehicles are modelled in Trainz.

In recent years, the working timetables contain a lot more information than they used to do. The ECML ones show what type of stock is used for a particular train (e.g. HST, 313, 91 etc), the timing load (weight) and also show which platform they use at each station stop. The current ones are freely available for download from the Network Rail website.

Ah, that's really interesting, I didn't know any of that! Thanks Brian, I appreciate you taking the time to explain.

Hi again Alex

I've dug out the carriage working book and here are a couple of weekday ECML consists for summer 1974.

10:00 am ex KX 1S17 to Edinburgh (The Flying Scotsman) - Air conditioned stock.

Loco, BSO, SO, SO, SO, SO, SO, SO, RKB(KS), RUO(TN), FO(A), FK, BFK.

12 coaches, weight not to exceed 410 tons. (KS) Kitchen South (TN) Toilet North, (A) To be marshalled with low seat numbers adjacent to RUO.

The train was made up from stock from carriage diagrams 300 (1st 3 coaches), 701 (coaches 4 to 7), G8 (RKB & RUO) and 701 again (remainder of train). Unfortunately I have been unable to obtain a carriage working diagrams book so I don't know what their previous workings were.

07:55 ex KX 1L03 to Leeds - Air conditioned stock

Loco, SO, SO, SO, RB(KS), RU(KS), FO, FO, BFK.

8 coaches weight 277 tons

Made up from diagrams 615 (1st 3 coaches), G1(RB & RU), 615 again (remainder of train).

I'm a bit pushed for time today but if you require further information please let me know.

Regards

Brian

I have a book 'Titled Trains of GB' which lists all the services with specific names (eg, The Bristolian, The Devonian, etc). It doesn't give much detail about the actual consists but it does say which locos were usually found on the services and the stock they would have been hauling, along with a few timings. If there's a specific named service you're after, let me know and I'll see if it's listed and post the info here.

Cheers,
PFX

Very interesting Brian, any chance you could post some more of these consists? I'm willing to form them up as Trainz consists then upload to the DLS like Rob Hill did with the steam consists. He also had a set of freight consists, is it possible to find out some for the 70s/80s?

Peter, I'd be very interested in seeing the ECML carriage workings for 1983 as well if you were able to send them over (hope this isn't going to start a stampede!)

Hi again

As there seems to be a bit of interest in these consists I have just uploaded some to the DLS after a bit of difficulty. They are for Down trains between midnight and 11:59am, summer Wednesdays 1974. I have named them using the following system "1974 Dn 11:00 1S21 Edinburgh" where 1974 is the year, Dn/Up (Direction of travel), 11:00 (time of departure), 1S21 (Train Classification ID in WTT), Edinburgh (Destination in Down Direction, Origin in Up Direction). Once I know that these have appeared on the DLS I will upload some for the up trains.

They are as accurate as I can make them within trainz with the main issue being the lack of a Mk2 BFK. Fortunately there is a Mk1 version available in the SnC DLC so I have used that. The other main problem was the lack of Mk2 Pullman cars up to the standard of Peter Hicks's vehicles. I have substituted Mk2 FOs and Mk1 RKs for them. Feel free to change the consists in any way for your own requirements.

Please note that these are for the main line trains only as I don't have carriage working books for Suburban or Cross Country trains.

I am using TS12 build 61388 so they have been uploaded from that.

I've got a missing dependencies on 1974 Dn 01:00 1N00 Newcastle, kuid:388068:100251:

Unknown Location: <kuid2:35412:10209:1>

Looks like its a Mike10 Mk1 of some sort, could you identify it for us and its location?

Also, regarding the three Peter Hicks Mk2f's BR Blue/Grey MK2f TSO; BR Blue/Grey MK2f BSO; BR Blue/Grey MK2f FO, the consists as uploaded show later iterations of these coaches than are built-in to TS12, so they also show as missing dependencies (though they can be manually corrected via the config).

But overall good work to get these consists up!

Paul

EDIT: foolish me, I should have remembered http://www.trainzkuidindex.com/ - it tracked down kuid2:35412:10209:1 in milliseconds as BR Mk1 GUV Blue (Express Parcels) on the SnC website, which, for some reason, I hadn't downloaded. I have now!

Hi again

I have just uploaded the Up consists so they should appear in a day or two.

Paul: With regard to the three Mk2f coaches, they are all shown as built in for me. The FO and BSO are iteration 1 and the TSO is iteration 3. Are you patched up to the latest build 61338 which as mentioned above is the build used to create and upload these? If not then it could be that they have been updated by one of the patches that I have installed to get to this build. The large SP1 patch updated quite a lot of content when I installed that.

Brian

Ah, that explains it, I've stuck with TS12 build 49922. Strange then that your uploads have appeared on the DLS as build 3.1 rather than 3.7, for which I'm grateful otherwise I wouldn't have been able to download them at all!

I know this is a very old thread, but can someone point me to these steam era consists? I can't seem to find them.

I think it was a .zip pack, but I cannot for the life of me remember how I got them. I'll do some research.

EDIT: All are available under the username lielestosbrat on the DLS. I'm sure there was a quicker way to get them all though.

Hi Alex102

Although not train makeups, the following site has a lot of information about the deltic locos and it is possible to get some idea of deltic working diagrams on the ECML in a particular year. This can help as the deltics generally hauled MK2 stock on most of their diagrammed trains.

Could you tell me what they are called? When I use the consist filter nothing shows up.

Edit:Or can someone pack them up and send them to me?

If copyright/distribution rules don't disallow it, I've got them packaged and could probably send them?

Anyone know whether I'm allowed to pass this around? It's freeware and available on the DLS so I don't see why not...
