Coming Home to Trainz

Hello, it's been a long time since I played with my Trainz, many computer crashes and computer replacements since. Anyway I want to start again and I have a few questions. First off I am devoting an entire computer to my Trainz game, My OS is windows 8.1 and the hard drive is 2T. The only time I will be logging on to the internet will be for Trainz content and for the auran web site. With that said: The copy of Trainz I have is 2004 and I will be using it mainly for building my own board, are there any problems I can expect by using such an old version? Will I still be able to download the latest content and will the content be compatible?

Or should I just get a later version? What do you suggest?

Welcome back!

Any version before TS12 no longer has access to the DLS unless you pay for FCT.
TS12 should have also lost this option already, but still has. This might change "soon".
Most content on the DLS will be for the later versions of Trainz (TS2009 and up).

I would advise to check your computer specs (mainly RAM and graphics card). If it can handle TANE I would advise you to get that, if not go for TS12.

Ram currently is 3.00GB, 2.87 usable, AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core processor 5000+ 2.60GHz. Direct x 11

Welcome back! Right now you can purchase the TS12 Gold Edition for $15, a package that is hard to beat. It includes a week-long FCT to improve download access speeds. Check out the online store above.

You show TRS2006 on your station stops ... if TRS2004, TRS2006 plays with choppy framerates under 40FPS ... 09, 10 with a high end video card ... and T:ANE (which requires a 64Bit OS) will not run any better, and will run much worse, possibly will not run at all ... even with performance sliders set at minimum

Here's what I think.

you gotta upgrade your system. I don't see a GPU listed, but I'm guessing it's not good.

if you wanna play TANE, there's no other option.

This is just a side note for you to ponder on, if you look at my timeline (Previous Versions of Trainz I own) I just got into T:ANE since Nov 2016, from TS-12, I intended to keep both TS-12 and T:ANE side by side, but I liked T:ANE better due to 64 vs 32 Bit Program Strength in my WIN10 theater, even with it's inherent issues and Asset In-Compatibilities? T:ANE is more rigorous in it's error checking than any other version of Trainz prior too!

Also if you have worked with Windows over the years, I started out with DOS 2.0 in 1986, pre win IOS then you know Windows will only allow certain programs to work in it, and others, forget it. Just the natural progression of Windows!

That said, you indicated you come from the Realm of Trainz 2004, long ways back, so if you could get TS-12 for 15$ and get some FCT for a week, that might not be a bad way to go, since your assets are very old, and T:ANE will probably balk big time or not even let them work? That brings to question here, how bad you want to keep your old Assets from 2004, now granted they may not work will in TS-12, nothing is 100% certain, guaranteed.

Want to add, issues with Assets and Routes both have been fixed in TS-12 then exported out and imported into T:ANE and they worked OK for some items.

There may be other's here who can speak better on this than me.

Just think you should explore all your options here. And Yes I like T:ANE and that's all I play with now,,but it has made me have to correct or delete a fair number of Assets due to my Knowledge restrictions on fixing Faulty Assets.

Thank goodness for PEV'S TOOL and SHANE, and numerous other great folks in this Forum that have helped.

Best of luck in your quest Sir.

I have used 2006 on an older system, TS2009 World Builder and TS2010 Engineers Edition on a fairly powerful system, and they seem to run well and are very stable. With that being said, I too have just upgraded to T:ANE and am waiting on the hard copy to be delivered. From what I have been told on here, it is the way to go. Upgrade once and have the best... :)
Either way, you will enjoy vast improvements from the 2004 version. Make sure to read the Hardware requirements for newer versions...

I don't think there is a weekly FCT ... You want a 1 year FCT ... If 04, 06, 09, 10, 12 work well on your 64bit PC, T:ANE might work better than TS12 ... If your PC is not 64bit you can only go as high as TS12

Im starting with a completely wiped out pc, fresh, no other games on it including Trainz, I mentioned I have the 2004 version dic, I upgraded to the 2009 version but it did not work well but that was on a different pc then this one, and I believe the 09 (DVD) was lost in a location move, I lived in Brooklyn NY at the time. So in a nut shell This is an old pc but a new 2TB hard drive.

It is not the hard drive that is preventing you from using newer software. It will be the RAM and your graphics card.

What is the graphics card you have in this PC?

To find out what your graphics processor is (and other hardware details) go to Control Panel, Device Manager.
Click on 'Display Adaptor' to reveal what Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is driving your display.

Ok thanks, it's NVIDA Gforce 6150SE nForce430, one other question My OS is W8.1 32 bit, will Trainz 12 work with 32 bit?

will it be mailed to me or is it a download? Mail is preferred.
The answer was in the part you quoted:
digital download
Just burn it to DVD or store the install files on a 2nd HD.
Or just download again if you lost the files. I think you get something like 10 downloads.

Edit:
Download and installation problem part of the topic split off and moved to here:
http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?137825-Download-and-install-problems
... hoping that way it gets the right attention.
